Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep Over Rio Grande

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Baseball finished their four-game weekend against Rio Grande (Ohio) with a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Barons (6-5) defeated the Red Storm (0-10) with a 17-2 win in game one and a 14-11 victory in the second game.

How It Happened | Game One

The Red Storm took an early lead, gathering a pair of hits and picking up one run while holding the Barons from scoring. Kennard Dawson, Michael Son, and Drew DeMasi reached base from walks in the second inning, Dawson scored from a Jack Morris walk to make the score 1-1. The Barons took a 2-1 lead with Carson Kirby reaching first on an error. With the bases load, Brandon Lawrence hit a bomb to left field for a grand slam, giving BPC a 6-1 lead.

In the third inning, Son and DeMasi put up singles to get on base. Brewton-Parker increased their lead to six, with a single from Morris to bring Son home from second base. Kendell Wade got the bases loaded with a walk, and DeMasi was brought home on a balk from the pitcher making the score 8-1.

Rio Grande picked up another run in the top of the fourth, by making the bases loaded with three singles, followed by a sacrifice fly to bring in the runner from third. The bottom of the fourth was a big inning for the Barons. Lawrence picked up a hit and advanced to second off an error. Tate Worrell got Lawrence to third with a base hit, before Dawson hit a massive double to bring them both in, increasing the Barons' lead to 10-2.

A two-run hit from Kyran Coleman brought the score to 12-2 with no outs. Wade gathered a two-RBI single, bringing in Coleman and DeMasi to score. Worrell would bring in Wade and Morris with a double, followed by Dawson reaching second base off an error, bringing in Worrell for his second run of the inning making the score 17-2.

Both teams held each other to three scoreless innings, to end the game 17-2 for the Barons.

Inside the Statistics
  • Brewton-Parker led 11-5 in hits with Worrell and Morris with a pair each.
  • Lawrence notched four RBIs for the day, three with the grand slam.
  • Worrell and Dawson picked up one stolen base each.
  • Brandon Russell (1-1) picked up the win, pitching for five innings, giving up five hits and two runs while getting five strikeouts and three walks.
  • Chris Harmon pitched the last two innings gathering two strikeouts.
How It Happened | Game two

Rio Grande kicked off the second game with a two-run homer and kept the Barons from scoring in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. After another scoreless inning for BPC, the Red Storm went up 3-0 with two doubles in the second inning.

In the third inning, Rio Grande picked up a solo home run to go up 4-0. Brewton-Parker finally scored at the bottom of the third, with a sacrifice fly from Kirby after Joshua Valente and Wade got on base, bringing home J. Reid Phillips who pinch-ran for
Valente. A sacrifice fly from Lawrence got Wade home, making the score 4-2.

After holding off Rio Grande in the top of the fourth, Dawson hit a missile scoring a solo homer to bring the Barons within one. Jacob Mantooth and Valente got on base before Wade gave the Barons a 6-4 lead with a huge three-run home run.

The Red Storm brought the score within one with a sacrifice fly to bring in a run, but after being walked, Son went around the bases on passed balls to make the score 7-5.

In the sixth inning, Rio Grande scored again off of a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the sixth, Valente and Wade got on base, before a single from Kirby brought home Phillips. A single from Worrell brought home Wade and Kirby before Dawson got Lawrence home with a single to make the score 11-6. A sacrifice fly from Son got Worrell home and DeMasi doubled to bring in Dawson to go up 13-7.

In the top of the seventh, Rio Grande picked up two more runs with a single after two walks. In the bottom of the inning, Wade was hit by a pitch to get on base and after stealing second, and advancing to third on a fly out, he came home on a single from Lawrence to give BPC a 14-8 lead.

In the eighth, the Red Storm hit another homer and picked up an RBI to cut the lead down to four. The Barons were able to hold the Red Storm to only one run in the ninth inning to take a 14-11 win.

  • The Red Storm led in hits 14-11 with Wade and Dawson with two each.
  • Wade gathered three RBIs with four runs.
  •  The Barons' baserunners picked up eight stolen bases, Wade and Mantooth had two each.
  • Chandler Koerner (1-0) picked up the win by pitching for two innings and only giving up two hits and one run.
