MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Lady Barons Volleyball team looked to bounce back today against UT Southern and even jumped out to win the first two sets 25-21 and 25-22. However, they failed to close and conceded the following three sets to lose three sets to two. UT Southern managed to turn the tables against the Lady Barons and outplayed them in the final three sets, winning 25-21, 25-21, and 15-9.
Coach Obed Quiles shared his thoughts on the team's performance. "We played well, we just need to learn to play through adversity. A lot of positive things to carry on for the rest of the season,"
First Set
The Lady Barons started the match strong, looking like they had early in the season, winning 25-21. They had 13 kills and only two errors on 24 attempts for a monster .458 hitting percentage. UT Southern struggled to keep up, sporting a .138 hitting percentage.
Second Set
The Lady Barons came out firing once again and took the next set 25-22 to take the first two sets. The Lady Barons had another 13 kills and only three errors, but with more attempts, they had a lower hitting percentage of .294. The Lady Barons had fewer kills than UT Southern in the second set but made fewer mistakes and grabbed the set.
Third Set
The Lady Barons saw their continued struggles to close out matches rear its head once again. After jumping to a two-nothing set lead, the Lady Barons allowed UT Southern to work back into the match. In the third set, the Lady Barons only had 12 kills and six errors on 53 attempts, with a hitting percentage of .113. While UT Southern only had a .169 hitting percentage, they had 16 kills to the Lady Barons' 12.
Fourth Set
The fourth set saw the Lady Barons stay in the match but be unable to take over the lead. They fell behind UT Southern and never managed to catch them after they took the lead six-five. The Lady Barons were forced to chase them and failed to win despite keeping it close. The Lady Barons had 16 kills and six errors on 39 attempts for a hitting percentage of .256, but once again, they had more errors than UT Southern, who only had two errors in the fourth set.
Fifth Set
In the final set, 15, the Lady Barons fell behind early and were again forced to chase the Firehawks the rest of the match. The Lady Barons struggled to control their mistakes, having six errors to the Firehawks' three, and could not swing the momentum back in their favor.
