Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ryan Feaster- Assistant Sports Information Director

Barons Fall vs UT Southern

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Barons Men's Soccer continued their post-hurricane campaign by hosting the University of Tennessee Southern on Saturday, but despite their best efforts, the Barons fell six-one to the Firehawks. The Firehawks came into the match tonight, and despite scoring two goals in the first half, the match was far from over. Plenty of scoring chances were traded. The Barons managed to cut the lead to one earlier in the second but could not keep the momentum on their side and conceded four unanswered goals to end the game.

Coach Bob Neuman shared his thoughts on their first game back: "We sadly ran out of steam today. I thought for a large portion of the first half, we asked the right questions of UT Southern, and we were maybe a bit unlucky not to get a goal.

Even at the start of the second half, when we grabbed a goal so quickly, I thought we might be able to grow into the game, but that's not soccer for you. You make a mistake, get punished, and have to respond. We didn't respond well enough today.

We're excited to have a few consistent days of training next week for our guys to get into the right swing of the season again before we see Thomas,"

First Half

The Barons showed a stout defense and traded chances with the Firehawks. Despite going down two-nil, they never backed down from their opponent and were looking for chances to claw their way back into the match. The Barons had consistent offensive chances in the first half and were pressing with a stronger attack than recently. Both teams were closely matched in the stats department for the first half outside of the goals department.

Second half

In the second half, the Barons started with an early goal from Feyisope Osifeso to cut the lead to one. The entire team was driving with everything they had, creating numerous more chances that just failed to hit their mark. Eighteen minutes later, the tide changed when the Firehawks scored their third goal of the night. The Barons lost their attack and fell back upon themselves. The Firehawks took the momentum swing and scored three more unanswered goals to win six-one.

Stats

  • The Barons trailed in shots 19-11.

  • The Barons trailed in corner kicks 11-5.

  • The Firehawks led in fouls 12-6.

  • The Barons led in saves eight-three.
