(RV) Women’s Basketball Falls Shy of Mobile in Road Conference Loss

MOBILE, Ala. – Brewton-Parker Women's Basketball traveled to Mobile, Ala. on Saturday to continue their Southern States Athletic Conference weekend road trip with a challenging matchup against the University of Mobile (Ala.) for the SSAC Game of the Week.

The Lady Barons (12-4, 4-2 SSAC) dropped short in the contest versus the Rams (15-2, 7-1 SSAC) in a 65-54 loss in H. Austill Pharr Gymnasium.

"We are not very good right now," Head Coach Steve Edwards said. "We lacked passion on this road trip, and we deserved to lose. Mobile is a good team, and they deserve a ton of credit."

"There is a long road ahead of us and we have to get a lot better before we can be a great team," Edwards mentioned.

How It Happened | First Quarter

Madison Evans opened the game for the first score at the 8:51 mark before Mobile would respond for their first score nearly 70 seconds later. The first six minutes of action proved to be a back-and-forth battle with both teams trading jabs and flipping share of the lead.

A pair of free throws from Evans at the 4:17 mark leveled the score at 8-8 and the score held there for the following couple of minutes. The Rams eventually broke through with an 8-0 run to swiftly shift the score in their favor, leading 6-8 with 14 seconds to play with A'Aliyah Clay closing out the period with minimal time left to cut BPC's deficit to 16-10.

How It Happened | Second Quarter

Mobile extended their lead to eight to open the second quarter, but the Lady Barons responded well with a 9-0 run over the next nearly four minutes of action to reclaim control of the score, leading 19-18 with 4:58 left until the break.

Brewton-Parker's momentum shift came to a screeching halt as the Rams were able to take advantage of the scoring struggles, answering with an 11-0 run to finish the quarter for a 29-19 lead at the half. UM outscored BPC 13-9 in the period.

How It Happened | Third Quarter

The Rams continued with the scoring early, shifting to a 33-19 lead in the first 90 seconds of the third period before Clay managed to find the basket for the Lady Barons at the 8:12 mark. Mobile moved into a 15-point advantage before buckets from Angel McRae and Evans knocked the BPC deficit down to 11 with five minutes remaining.

The next two minutes were all Mobile as the hosts scored seven unanswered points for a 43-25 lead. Clay and Keonya Mincey helped build up a 12-5 run for the Lady Barons with Clay netting five and Mincey scoring seven, closing the quarter out down 48-37.

How It Happened | Fourth Quarter

A trey from Clay got the BPC deficit down to eight points just 16 seconds into the quarter. UM responded with two buckets to move back to a double-digit lead. Mincey scored two straight baskets at the 7:09 mark and the 6:21 mark to return to an eight-point deficit, down 52-44.

The Rams responded yet again with a pair of layups to help cushion their advantage. With less than four minutes to play, Brewton-Parker was 14 points behind Mobile. After a few moments of scoreless efforts, a layup from Evans at the 2:34 mark and a three-pointer from Clay cut the Mobile lead to 59-50 with 2:20 remaining. Mobile held tough in the final moments of the game, securing a 65-54 victory with a 6-4 stretch to knock off the Lady Barons for their second conference loss of the season.
