MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Men's Basketball welcomed Faulkner (Ala.) to Gillis Gymnasium for an SSAC matchup on Tuesday night.
The Barons (7-11, 3-7 SSAC) took down the Eagles (9-10, 4-7 SSAC) in a 78-75 overtime thriller, winning the game with 0.3 seconds remaining.
How It Happened | First Half
A layup from
Lance Smith started the game for the Barons an opening 15-7 run through the first five minutes. During the stretch, Smith had seven points while
Zailan Blue had six.
Faulkner responded with 10 unanswered points to take a two-point lead with 10:56 in the half.
Jordan Johnson broke the Eagles' scoring streak with a pair of free throws to tie the game 17-17 with just over 10 minutes left to play.
It was a back-and-forth battle for the next four minutes, ending in a 10-10 stretch lead by Johnson with seven points and Smith with three to keep it tied up at 27-27 with 6:06 on the clock. Over the last six minutes of the half, the Barons took a 10-6 stretch, led by Smith with five points and
Kendall Norrington Jr. with three, to go into halftime leading 37-33.
How It Happened | Second Half
Nearly two minutes into the half,
Dre Burroughs struck first for the Barons from behind the arc, to give the Barons a seven-point lead with 18:20 left on the clock. The Eagles responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game back up at 40-40.
Burroughs broke the run with a trey to put BPC ahead again, but Faulkner continued their push with a 7-3 stretch to take a 47-46 lead over the Barons with 12:08 left on the clock. Faulkner put up five more points, to take a seven-point lead over BPC before the Barons produced a 9-3 stretch to make the game even at 55-55 with five and a half minutes left to play.
Brewton-Parker closed out the half with a 9-8 stretch led by six points from Burroughs to give the Barons a 64-63 lead with 1:42 on the clock but the Eagles took advantage of a late-game free throw to tie the game at 64-64, forcing overtime.
How It Happened | Overtime
The Barons scored first in overtime with an "and one" from Smith. The Eagles put the game back to 67-67 with a trey, before Johnson got fouled from behind the arc and put in all three of his free throws to go up 70-67 with 3:49 left in overtime.
Faulkner put it within one point with a jumper, before Blue hit a massive trey to go back up by four with 2:51 to play. The Eagles produced a 6-2 run to tie the game at 75-75, leaving three seconds left on the clock. Smith clutched up for BPC, hitting a huge game-winning three to put the Barons up 78-75 with 0.3 seconds remaining.
