Barons Drop SSAC Championship Opener to Talladega

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Postseason play for Brewton-Parker Baseball began on Wednesday evening with a matchup against Talladega (Ala.) in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The No. 7-seeded Barons (16-34) fell to the No. 2-seeded Tornadoes (28-16-1) in a 6-4 loss after taking an early lead in the opening frame.

How It Happened

Brewton-Parker jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning as Kyran Coleman connected for a leadoff single to center field followed by a free base for Jack Morris. Kennard Dawson barreled a two-RBI single to score both runners and advanced to third with an error from the Talladega defense.

Brandon Lawrence managed to land on first after an error by the Tornadoes which Dawson was able to cross home for the third run of the inning. BPC closed out the opening frame with a pair of runners stranded and a three-run advantage over the second seed.

Despite being gifted two errors in the bottom half of the first, Talladega was unable to record a run as the bases were left loaded. The Tornadoes leveled the game in the bottom of the second with a two-run homer followed up by an RBI single before eventually claiming control of the lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the third for a 4-3 edge.

Talladega utilized an error as well as a two-RBI double to jump out to a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brewton-Parker struggled to produce any sort of effective offense until the top of the ninth inning, producing an RBI walk for Lawrence which cut the deficit down to two runs. Unfortunately, that was all BPC had left in the tank as three runners were left stranded to close the game.
