Baseball Concludes 2023 Campaign with Loss to Faulkner at the SSAC Championship

HATTIESBURG, Miss. –Brewton-Parker Baseball continued postseason action on Thursday with day two action at the SSAC Baseball Championship in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The No. 7-seeded Barons (16-35) dropped the win or go home matchup to No. 6-seeded Faulkner (13-34) in a 13-6 loss.

How It Happened

Faulkner took a commanding lead early in the opening inning by scoring nine runs on a total of six hits while leaving two runners stranded. BPC started off with pitching woes early, forcing a change after Carlos Rodriguez gave up four runs to begin.

After a scoreless second inning, Brewton-Parker found a lone double from Kyran Coleman but could not push across the run leaving Coleman stranded in the third inning. The Eagles added to the tally in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a BPC error for a 10-0 advantage.

The Barons finally added a run to the board in the fifth inning with an RBI groundout for Tate Worrell to score Malik Germany who reached on a base hit. BPC managed to add another score in the sixth with Kennard Dawson producing a leadoff single followed up by an RBI single from Brandon Lawrence to cut the deficit down to eight runs.

Faulkner responded with an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 11-2 lead. Brewton-Parker was unable to produce much offense until the top of the eighth inning with a two-run homer from Jacob Mantooth to give BPC four runs in the ball game.

The Eagles utilized four hits to push across two more runs for a 13-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth before the Barons managed to close out the game with a two-RBI single from Lawrence to move the score to 13-6 to close out the game.

Inside the Statistics
  • Faulkner held a 13-10 hitting advantage while both teams notched two extra-base hits apiece.
  • Lawrence led the way for BPC with two hits, three RBIs, and a run scored while Dawson notched two hits and two runs followed up by Mantooth's two-RBI homer.
  • Brewton-Parker's base runners gathered a total of six stolen bases with J. Reid Phillips and Coleman both recording a pair of stolen bases.
  • Rodriguez (3-5) was given the loss after pitching just 0.2 innings to start. He gave up seven earned runs and two hits, walking four batters as well as striking out one.
  • Ryan Dopson pitched for 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits. He struck out six batters and walked three in the process.
  • Jered Marrs closed out the final two innings and gave up two earned runs, four hits, and two walks.
