Baseball Secures Sweep Over Blue Mountain in 10-9 Series Finale Win

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – In the series finale, Brewton-Parker baseball had one opportunity on Saturday afternoon to record the first SSAC sweep of the season with a matchup against Blue Mountain (Miss.) in Millington, Tenn.

The Barons (13-26, 4-14 SSAC) downed the Toppers (21-17, 6-12 SSAC) in a 10-9 victory, surging in the ninth inning to seal the sweep over the hosts.

How It Happened

Blue Mountain opened the game with back-to-back walks before getting a base hit and lining out on a double play. With two outs the hosts scored on a passed ball to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Toppers recorded another walk and followed up with a two-RBI single to move to 3-0 lead before scoring another run on an error from the Barons.

The Toppers tallied an additional run on an error in the bottom of the second inning to lead 5-0, leaving two runners stranded in the process. Brewton-Parker finally responded in the top of the third inning scoring on a groundout from Kyran Coleman as J. Reid Phillips reach on a walk.

BPC added to the tally in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit down to three runs, scoring on another ground out as Eduardo Castillo brought in Kennard Dawson who notched a base hit as the leadoff batter.

Brewton-Parker continued to roll, adding another score in the fifth inning as Carson Kirby notched an RBI single. Malik Germany led the inning with a double while Kirby's base hit and Coleman's single followed.

The Barons moved into the driver's seat in the sixth inning as Phillips homered to left field which brough home Jacob Mantooth and Germany for a 6-5 BPC lead. Blue Mountain responded well in the bottom half of the inning, producing three hits to bring home four runs to reclaim the lead by three runs.

BPC managed to close out the game well with an RBI single from Mantooth in the seventh inning followed by an RBI double from Mantooth and a two-RBI double from Drew DeMasi to take a 10-9 lead in the ninth inning. Despite producing two hits in the bottom of the ninth, BPC was able to hold on to the one-run advantage for the series sweep.

Inside the Statistics
  • BPC held a 13-8 advantage in hits and led 3-2 in doubles while also boasting the lone home run of the day coming off the Phillips' bat.
  • Phillips led with three RBIs while Mantooth, Germany, and Kirby led with two hits apiece.
  • Mantooth also recorded a pair of runs and a pair of RBIs.
  • Blue Mountain held a commanding 6-2 lead in stolen bases.
  • Robin Haven started on the mound, pitching for 1.2 innings, and giving up two earned runs while walking seven batters.
  • Chandler Koerner came in to pitch for 4.0 innings, striking out five batters while giving up four earned runs.
  • Chris Harmon made a brief two-inning appearance before Ty Cook (4-10) managed to earn the win with one inning to play. He allowed just two hits and struck out a batter in the process.
