MOUNT VERNON, Ga.– Brewton-Parker baseball opened its weekend series against Stillman (Ala.) on Friday night with a single nine-inning contest on Mount Vernon.
The Barons (14-26, 5-14 SSAC) defeated the Tigers (12-21, 1-15 SSAC) in a 10-6 battle which saw four homers between the two sides.
How It Happened
Stillman struck first in the opening inning of play with a single and a two-run homer to take a 2-0 lead. The Tigers notched a base hit but left the runner stranded to close out the top half of the inning. Brewton-Parker responded with walk followed by an RBI double from
Kennard Dawson before
Eduardo Castillo connected for an RBI single to level the game 2-2 in the bottom of the first inning.
The visitors put together an RBI sacrifice flyout as well as an RBI single to reclaim the lead with a 4-2 advantage in the second. After closing out the third scoreless, Brewton-Parker ascended to a two-run lead of their own by scoring one run from an RBI single off the bat of
Jacob Mantooth while the highlight of the inning was
Tate Worrell's three-run homer which boosted BPC over SC with a 6-4 edge.
Stillman managed to record three hits in the top of the fifth, yet two runners were left on as the Brewton-Parker defense kept control of any runs being given up. In the bottom of the fifth,
Jack Morris barreled a homer to left field to give BPC a 7-4 lead. The Tigers swiftly responded with a solo homer of their own in the sixth inning to gain one run back on the Barons.
Brewton-Parker tallied one run in the seventh inning, finding a walk and a stolen base from
Kyran Coleman while eventually scoring on an error to move back to a three-run advantage. The Barons advanced to a larger lead in the eighth inning, by scoring two runs off an error while notching just one hit from
Drew DeMasi to lead 10-5. Stillman clawed its way back to a four-run deficit in the top of the ninth, but it was too little too late for the visitors as the Barons held onto the lead for the 10-6 victory.
