Barons Knock Down Toppers in Doubleheader Sweep on Friday

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – After a change in venue due to inclement weather in the Blue Mountain, Mississippi area, the Brewton-Parker baseball program took on Blue Mountain at the USA Stadium in Millington, Tennessee for first two games of the weekend series.

The Barons (12-26, 3-14 SSAC) returned to winning ways in SSAC play with a doubleheader sweep over the Toppers (21-16, 6-11 SSAC), securing the series with a 6-5 game one victory followed by an 11-8 victory in game two.

How It Happened | G1 – BPC 6, BMCU 5

In the scheduled seven-inning contest, the Barons opened with a leadoff double from Kyran Coleman before Kennard Dawson notched an RBI groundout to bring home Coleman for the first run of the game. Eduardo Castillo connected for a base hit but was left stranded as BPC closed the top half of the first inning with a 1-0 lead.

Blue Mountain answered with a loaded bases, hit by pitch to level the game in the bottom of the first inning. Jacob Mantooth put a barrel on a two-out single to center field before Malik Germany homered to left field to give Brewton-Parker a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning.

The Toppers responded yet again with a solo homer run to cut their deficit down to just one run in the second inning before barreling a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to reclaim the lead, taking a 5-3 advantage while producing a total of five hits in the inning.

Drew DeMasi doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball in the fourth inning, leading the way for Anyelo Sanchez to connect on an RBI double to push across DeMasi for the Barons' fourth run of the game.

In the top of the fifth, Jack Morris jacked a two-run homer to give Brewton-Parker a 6-5 lead pushing Coleman across the dish in the process. The Toppers struggled to take advantage of three runners on base in the fifth as well as one in the sixth as the Barons managed to hold on to the one-run edge to secure the first game of the afternoon.

Inside the Statistics
  • Both teams produced nine hits each with the two sides also notching two home runs apiece.
  • Brewton-Parker led with three doubles as well.
  • Coleman and Sanchez led BPC with two hits each while Germany and Morris led with two RBIs apiece off their home runs.
  • Carlos Rodriguez started the first two innings and gave up two earned runs, striking out three batters and walking five while allowing just one hit.
  • Noah Gilbert (1-2) picked up his first win, tossing five innings. He allowed eight hits and gave up three earned runs whole striking out two batters as well as walking one.
How It Happened | G2 – BPC 11, BMCU 8

The Barons utilized a late-game surge to take the second contest of the game after the Toppers opened with a heavy first two innings. BMCU found themselves with a swift 8-0 advantage after just two innings of action. The Toppers took advantage of a loaded bases walk to score the first run before scoring the second on a sacrifice fly.

With a 2-0 advantage, the hosts moved to an 8-0 lead with six runs in the bottom half of the second inning. The inning was highlighted by a two-run homer as Blue Mountain tallied five hits and took care of a BPC error in the inning. Fortunately for BPC, the Toppers left three runners stranded to close out the inning.

Brewton-Parker answered well in the top of the third inning, scoring five runs off a total of six hits to pull the deficit back to just three runs. Germany led with a base hit followed by a single from Tate Worrell. After a single from Morris, Dawson notched an RBI base hit for the first run.

Castillo reached on a fielder's choice which scored the second run just before Sanchez barreled a double to left field for two RBIs. DeMasi followed with an RBI single to score the fifth run for the Barons.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Barons continued to battle back into the game by taking advantage of two errors from the hosts as well as notching three hits which included an RBI double from Germany to score three runs in the fifth inning to level the game at 8-8. Brewton-Parker eventually took control of the score in the sixth inning with another run scored on an error followed by a run pushed home on a fielder's choice, giving BPC a 10-8 lead.

The Barons moved to an 11-8 advantage with an RBI single from Castillo in the eighth inning and managed to hold off the Toppers to the end, securing the second game of the day.

Inside the Statistics
  • BPC held a 15-8 hitting advantage while the Toppers gave up three errors compared to the Barons' one mishap.
  • BMCU led 4-3 in doubles while also notching a home run.
  • Germany led the batting efforts with three hits while Sanchez and DeMasi led with three RBIs each.
  • Ty Cook started on the mound, pitching for just 1.2 innings. He gave up seven earned runs on five hits, walking four batters and striking out two.
  • Jered Marrs (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, throwing for 5.1 innings. He gave up just two hits and struck out six batters while walking four in the process.
  • Ryan Dopson earned his first save of the season, pitching the final two innings and striking out one, walking one, and allowing just one hit.

  • The Barons are scheduled to wrap up the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET from USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn.
