Lady Barons Split with No. 13 Knights to Wrap Up Regular Season Play

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker softball hosted No. 13 Middle Georgia on Wednesday afternoon for the regular season finale in Mount Vernon.

The Lady Barons (19-23, 9-19 SSAC) split with the Knights (38-10, 22-6 SSAC) in a 4-3 extra innings loss followed by a 4-3 win in game two.

How It Happened | G1 – BPC 3, MGA 4

Brewton-Parker opened the game in the first inning with three hits and one run pushed home for an early lead. Alyssa Usrey tripled and scored on a groundout from Abbey Flowers followed by back-to-back base hits from MacKenzie Tripp and BryAnn Pound. Unfortunately, the pair were left stranded to close out the inning.

The Lady Barons added a run to the tally in the bottom of the second inning with a leadoff walk from Josalin Whitten followed by a sacrifice bunt from Cailyn Snellgrove. Alexis Bradshaw singled to bring home Whitten for the 2-0 led with Usrey barreling a base hit to close things out.

BPC continued into the third inning with hits from Whitten and Ashley Wilson. The Lady Barons tallied a third run with an error from the Knights to take a 3-0 lead, closing the inning with the bases loaded.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Middle Georgia began to rally scoring a run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to eventually force extra innings. Both the eighth and ninth innings resulted in a scoreless affair prior to the Knights taking advantage of the 10th-inning rule as they notched an RBI double for the 4-3 lead. Unfortunately for BPC, the Lady Barons were unable to extend the game further in the bottom of the tenth.

Inside the Statistics
  • Middle Georgia held an 11-8 hitting advantage as well as a 3-1 edge in extra-base hits.
  • Usrey led BPC with two hits which included a triple.
  • The Lady Barons led with a 3-1 margin in stolen.
  • Laykin Brown (6-13) pitched all 10 innings for BPC, receiving the loss after giving up three earned runs. She also struck out four batters in the process.
How It Happened | G2 – BPC 4, MGA 3

The Knights took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, utilizing a pair of hits and an error from the BPC defense. The Lady Barons were able to place a runner on as Pound notched a base hit, but left the runner stranded to wrap up the bottom of the second.

Wilson tripled to center field with one out in the third, but Brewton-Parker struggled to bring Wilson home after closing the inning with a ground out and strikeout. Middle Georgia moved to a 3-0 lead in the fourth with two hits which included an RBI single for the three-run advantage.

After another empty inning in the fourth, BPC notched a hit in the fifth with a single from Whitten but continued with no runs on the board. Brewton-Parker eventually broke through in the sixth inning as Bradshaw barreled a leadoff double before scoring on a fielder's choice from Tripp for the first of four runs in the inning.

BPC added another run with Usrey scoring on a wild pitch prior to Chloe Strickland's RBI single to score Tripp for the equalizing score. The Lady Barons took over the lead with an RBI single from Whitten to score Pound for the 4-3 edge over the Knights. BPC closed out the inning with four runs, three hits, all while leaving two runners stranded. Brewton-Parker held strong in the top of the seventh, allowing just one hit to secure the split with the 4-3 victory over the No. 13-ranked Knights.

Inside the Statistics
  • MGA held a narrow 7-6 advantage in hits while BPC led 2-0 in extra-base hits.
  • Whitten led the Lady Barons with two hits and an RBI while Bradshaw led with a double and Wilson led with a triple.
  • Emma Garner (1-1) earned the win after pitching the final two innings, allowing just one hit.
  • Prior to Garner, Natalie O'Neal started and tossed the first five innings. O'Neal gave up one earned run while allowing six hits. She struck out two batters and walked one as well.
Next Up
  • Brewton-Parker will now prep for the SSAC Tournament in Decatur, Alabama which starts towards the end of next week.
