Barons Drop Two Games at No. 4 Georgia Gwinnett

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Brewton-Parker College baseball traveled up to Lawrenceville on Saturday for a doubleheader against No. 4 Georgia Gwinnett to complete the multi-site weekend series.

The Barons (16-30) dropped two games to the highly ranked Grizzlies (40-5) in an 8-2 loss and a 4-0 loss.

How It Happened | G1 – BPC 2, GGC 8

Georgia Gwinnett scored first with a two-RBI double followed by an RBI double to take an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. After a leadoff groundout and a walk for DeMasi in the second, DeMasi advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt just before Jacob Mantooth doubled to place two runners on for Brewton-Parker. The Barons managed to push home DeMasi on a groundout from Malik Germany to cut the deficit to two runs.

The Grizzlies added another run in the bottom half of the second as they barreled a double and snagging a stolen base to take a 4-1 lead before knocking out a homer in the bottom of the third inning to move to a 5-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, GGC moved to a 7-1 lead a with a two-run homer.  The Grizzlies tallied one final run in the sixth inning with an RBI single to move to a seven-run edge. For the Barons, Germany managed to barrel a two-out homer to cut the BPC deficit back to six which was not enough to spark a rally in the scheduled seven-inning contest as Georgia Gwinnett took the game 8-2.

Inside the Statistics
  • GGC outhit BPC 10-2 in game one as Mantooth and Germany were the pair that notched a hit for the Barons.
  • Germany finished the game with the pair of RBIs for BPC.
  • Robin Haven (1-2) received the loss, pitching the first 2.2 innings. He gave up five earned runs on five hits while striking out two batters and walking one.
  • Chandler Koerner finished the final 3.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked two as well.
How It Happened | G2 – BPC 0, GGC 4

The Grizzlies continued their dominant batting in game two of the doubleheader while the Barons struggled to produce offense. GGC scored a run in the second off a RBI single while adding two in the third inning for a 3-0 lead before adding the fourth in the eighth with a score from a balk.

Brewton-Parker was held hitless until the seventh inning. Outside of the seventh, the Barons' best chance of producing a score came in the top of the fifth inning with a walk for Eduardo Castillo, a hit by pitch for DeMasi, and a walk for Germany as BPC left two runners on base.

In the top of the seventh, Brewton-Parker notched the first hit of the game with a two-out single from Mantooth followed by a single from Germany. After Ethan Frasca was hit by pitch, the Barons loaded the bases but left all three runners stranded as Frasca was out on a pickoff at first base.

Inside the Statistics
  • GGC held an 11-2 edge in hits.
  • Mantooth and Germany both notched a hit for BPC.
  • Ty Cook (5-11) received the loss after pitching for seven innings. He gave up three earned runs while allowing 10 hits. Cook struck out five batters and walked four in the process.
  • Ryan Dopson finished the game with an inning pitched, allowing one earned run on just one hit. He struck out one batter as well.
