Baseball Falls to Middle Georgia

COCHRAN, Ga. – Brewton-Parker College baseball traveled to Cochran, Georgia for the first game of the regular-season finale series at Middle Georgia on Thursday.

The Barons (16-31, 7-15 SSAC) dropped the series opener to the Knights (28-18, 14-8 SSAC) in a 20-10, eight-inning loss.

How It Happened

Brewton-Parker notched a hit in the first inning with a double from Jack Morris. BPC closed out the inning with Morris left stranded before the Knights opened the bottom of the first with an RBI single and another run scored on an error for a two-run lead.

The Barons leveled the game in the second inning. Brandon Lawrence led with a walk followed by Drew DeMasi reaching first on an error. With two runners on, BPC scored on an error at third base to bring Lawrence home for the first run. Tate Worrell then brought DeMasi home on a single to center field to equalize the score 2-2.

Brewton-Parker added to the tally in the third inning with Eduardo Castillo earning a base hit. BPC pushed a runner home on an RBI ground out from Lawrence after advancing pinch runner J. Reid Phillips on a balk and a passed ball, taking a 3-2 lead.

Middle Georgia answered promptly with a two-RBI homer to take a 4-3 edge before scoring on an error to move to a 5-3 advantage. The Knights notched three hits and left a runner on to end the inning.

The Barons surged in the fourth inning, scoring four runs while producing three hits to reclaim the lead with a 7-5 lead. Jacob Mantooth homered from leadoff position to cut the deficit down to one run before Morris knocked in the leveling run on a ground out. Castillo's RBI single moved the Barons to a 6-5 lead as Lawrence notched an RBI single to make the two-run gap.

A sacrifice fly from the hosts tightened the score in the fourth to a one-score ballgame. After a scoreless fifth inning, the game was halted due to inclement weather. Coming out of the rain delay, BPC advanced to a three-run lead with RBI singles from Mantooth and Malik Germany.

Things fell apart for the Barons as Middle Georgia exploded to a 14-9 lead, scoring eight runs on five hits and taking advantage of three errors from the BPC defense while the guests exhausted three pitchers in the process.

MGA scored two runs on an error and followed with a grand slam to take a 12-9 lead. The Knights closed out the sixth inning with an RBI double and an error to score the 14th run of the game. Middle Georgia advanced to a 16-9 lead with a two-run homer in the seventh.

Brewton-Parker eventually responded in the eighth inning with Lawrence and DeMasi notching base hits followed by Lawrence scoring on a balk. The Knights ended things in the eighth inning, scoring four runs off three hits to close the game with a 20-10 advantage.
