MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The Brewton-Parker College baseball program hosted the No. 4-ranked team in the NAIA in Georgia Gwinnett on Friday afternoon to open a split-venue weekend series.
The Barons (16-28) fell in a convincing win for the Grizzlies (38-5) in a 20-6 ballgame that was cut short from the originally scheduled nine innings.
How It Happened
Georgia Gwinnett struck early with a two-RBI double followed by an RBI single to take a 3-0 advantage in the first inning. After a solo homer in the second from
Drew DeMasi to make the score 3-1, the Grizzlies responded in the third with a loaded bases hit-by-pitch as well as an RBI single to take a 5-1 lead.
GGC added to the tally in the top half of the fourth, surging to an 11-1 lead highlighted by a solo homer as well as a two-RBI double. The Barons were fortunate enough to score on an error from the Grizzlies in the fourth while also scoring on a passed ball strikeout to cut the deficit down to nine runs.
The Grizzlies added another run in the fifth inning off a homer before the Barons found a run in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a fielder's choice moving to a 12-4 ballgame. Georgia Gwinnett continued with an RBI single in the sixth while BPC found an RBI single from
Jacob Mantooth to advance the score 13-5.
GGC capped off the game with a seven-run performance in the seventh inning, highlighted by a three-run homer to move to a 15-run advantage. The Barons found one final run in the bottom of the seventh as
Jack Morris connected for an RBI single to score
Kyran Coleman for the sixth run of the game.
Inside the Statistics
- GGC outhit BPC with a 20-6 margin while also leading 4-1 in doubles and 3-1 in home runs.
- DeMasi led the Barons with a 2-for-4 performance which included the homer and a double, for two runs as well as an RBI.
- Morris led with two RBIs on two hits.
- Carlos Rodriguez (3-4) received the loss, pitching the first two innings. He gave up eight earned runs, eight hits, five walks, while striking out three batters.
- Bryce Morley pitched for 2.2 innings, giving up four earned runs and seven hits while striking out a pair.
- Both Jered Marrs and Mason Beacham combined for 1.2 innings, giving up a combined seven earned runs and five hits.
