Baseball Splits Saturday Action Against No. 6 Faulkner; Eagles Take SSAC Opening Series

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker baseball wrapped up the opening series of SSAC play on Saturday with a doubleheader against No. 6 Faulkner (Ala.).

The Barons (9-11, 1-2 SSAC) split the day against the Eagles (10-8, 2-1 SSAC), opening with a 3-2 win before falling in a tough 23-6 defeat.

How It Happened | G1 – BPC 3, FCU 2

Faulkner opened the game with three hits to help push across a pair of runs for an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. BPC was held scoreless in the bottom half of the inning before responding in the second with a single from Anyelo Sanchez and an RBI single from Jacob Mantooth to cut the deficit down to one run.

After holding the visitors to just one hit, Brewton-Parker took control of the game with a two-run "inside the park" home run from Brandon Lawrence. Lawrence knocked a ball deep into left field and was fortunate enough to be sent home while pushing a run across to give the Barons a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

The Barons were knocking on the door in the fourth inning with singles from Mantooth, Kyran Coleman, and Eduardo Castillo, but all three were left on base. Both teams struggled to produce much offense for the rest of the way as the scheduled seven-inning contest finished with a 3-2 final score.

Inside the Statistics
  • The Barons led 8-6 in hits with Mantooth producing two hits followed by Lawrence's one hit and two RBIs.
  • Carlos Rodriguez pitched the entire game, giving up two earned runs while striking out five batters. He moves to a 3-0 record on the season.

The Eagles took claim to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning, producing four hits, including three doubles. Mantooth connected for a solo homer to left field to cut a run back in the bottom of the second.

The Barons pulled themselves within reach in the bottom of the third inning, scoring three runs on three hits to move the score to 5-4. Kennard Dawson produced a double before Lawrence notched a two-RBI double followed by an RBI single from Tate Worrell.

Faulkner moved to a 7-4 lead in the fourth inning with a two-RBI double, creating a little bit of separation. After a scoreless fourth inning for BPC which saw three runners left on base, the Barons managed to pull back within a one-run deficit in the fifth inning.

Brewton-Parker utilized two hits as well as a wild pitch to score two runs, knocking on the door. Unfortunately for the Barons, things slipped away swiftly in the sixth inning with the visitors exploding to a 16-6 lead with nine runs off six hits and a pair of errors. The Eagles added seven more runs in the top of the seventh to advance to a 23-6 lead, leaving the Barons far behind.

  • The Eagles led 16-10 in hits while the Barons gave up six errors in the game.
  • Three Barons notched two hits apiece with Lawrence leading with two hits and two RBIs.
  • A total of seven pitchers appeared on the mound for BPC with Ryan Dopson earning the start.
  • As a unit, the Barons' pitching staff walked 10 batters and gave up 19 earned runs.
