MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker baseball opened SSAC play on Friday night with a single nine-inning contest against No. 6 Faulkner (Ala.) for the first game of the weekend series.
The Barons (8-10, 0-1 SSAC) dropped the contest to the Eagles (9-7, 1-0 SSAC) in an 8-2 loss on home soil.
How It Happened
Faulkner struck first after a scoreless opening inning, utilizing an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Brewton-Parker was able to place a runner on base with a single from Drew DeMasi, but the Eagles' defensive efforts thwarted any chances for the Barons.
In the third, Faulkner added two more runs with a pair of base hits to take a 3-0 lead. Kyran Coleman managed to connect for a two-out single in the bottom half of the inning but was left on base.
The Eagles tallied two hits and took advantage of a BPC error, adding one more run in the top of the fourth inning for a four-run advantage. Eduardo Castillo connected for a base hit, but the Barons struggled to advance any base runners home.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the visitors produced three hits and pushed home three runs to take a 7-0 lead in the sixth inning. Brewton-Parker managed to finally respond in the bottom of the seventh with three hits and one run as Tate Worrell knocked in an RBI single to cut the deficit by one.
Faulkner tallied one final run in the top of the eighth to take an 8-1 lead with Brewton-Parker adding one final run in the ninth to move the deficit back to six runs. Anyelo Sanchez notched a double while Kennard Dawson singled. Sanchez was able to cross home plate off a wild pitch, sealing the game at 8-2.
Inside the Statistics
- Faulkner led 11-9 in hits with Castillo and DeMasi leading BPC with two hits apiece.
- Ty Cook started on the bump, tossing for 5.1 innings. Cook gave up six earned runs on the night while allowing eight hits and striking out eight batters.
- Aaron Adams made his collegiate debut on the mound, throwing for two innings and striking out a pair.
- Chris Harmon closed out the final 1.2 innings for BPC.
