NEW ORLEANS, La. – Brewton-Parker baseball competed against No. 15 Loyola (La.) on Saturday in doubleheader action to close out the SSAC weekend series.
The Barons (9-15, 1-5 SSAC) dropped a pair of losses to the Wolf Pack (18-8, 5-1 SSAC) with a 13-6 loss in game one followed up by a tight 5-4 loss in game two.
How It Happened | G1 – BPC 6, LNO 13
Brewton-Parker struck first with two runs in the opening inning off three hits as
Kyran Coleman connected for a leadoff single followed by an RBI off the bat of
Tate Worrell. After a double from
Brandon Lawrence,
Jacob Mantooth connected for an RBI single to bring home the second score.
Loyola responded with a single in the bottom half of the first inning while taking advantage of an error to score one run to cut the deficit in half. The Wolf Pack took control of the score with a pair of hits and three runs to lead 4-2 in the bottom of the second inning.
In the top of the third, the Barons leveled the score with a two-run homer from Worrell to pull the Barons back into the game, 4-4. Loyola answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with two hits while also benefitting from two errors from BPC to take a 6-4 lead while also leaving the bases loaded.
Brewton-Parker pulled back within a one-run deficit with a single from Mantooth followed up by an RBI base hit from
Malik Germany to score the Barons' fifth run of the game in the fifth inning. The Wolf Pack had another answer for BPC with a two-run homer to pull out to an 8-5 lead in the bottom half of the inning.
BPC added one more run in the top of the sixth with three hits highlighted by an RBI single from Coleman to cut the deficit down to two runs. Unfortunately for BPC, LNO tallied five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to move to a 13-6 lead, highlighted by a three-run homer.
Inside the Statistics
- The hosts boasted a 13-10 hit advantage while also taking advantage of five errors from the Barons.
- Worrell's three RBIs highlighted the game followed by a duo of hits from Coleman, Mantooth, and Anyelo Sanchez.
- Carlos Rodriguez records his first loss of the season, starting on the bump and tossing 4.1 innings while giving up six earned runs while striking out six batters.
- Noah Gilbert made an appearance for an inning with Chris Harmon closing the final two-thirds inning.
How It Happened | G2 – BPC 4, LNO 5
The Barons battled in game two, falling in walk-off fashion in the ninth inning. Loyola utilized three hits to score the opening run in the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 edge.
After a leadoff walk from Sanchez and a pop-up, Sanchez made his way to third base off a wild pitch as well as a black before scoring on a groundout from
Drew DeMasi to level the score in the second inning.
BPC's bats slowly began to produce some base hits with singles from Worrell and Lawrence. Unfortunately, the Barons left three runners on base to remain at a 1-1 stalemate after two innings.
Loyola moved to a 2-1 lead in the third with a solo shot over the wall and followed with a two-error performance from BPC to help score another run in the fourth to lead 3-1.
Brewton-Parker equalized in the top of the sixth inning, taking care of an error from the hosts while notching three hits to level the game 3-3. DeMasi recorded an RBI base hit followed by a single from Germany and an RBI single from
Eduardo Castillo.
BPC eventually took a 4-3 lead with a single from Castillo and an RBI single from Lawrence to score the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning. The Wolf Pack quickly leveled things with another solo homer in the bottom half of the inning.
The Barons were held scoreless in the top half of the ninth before Loyola slammed the door shut with a triple and three-straight walks to score the walk-off run to win 5-4.
Inside the Statistics
- Brewton-Parker held a 10-8 batting advantage, but Loyola had the edge with two home runs.
- Castillo, Worrell, and Lawrence all led the BPC bats with two hits each followed while DeMasi led with two RBIs.
- Ryan Dopson started on the mound, tossing for six innings. He gave up two earned runs and six hits while striking out two batters.
- Carter McWilliams and Ty Cook both made brief appearances with Cook giving up the final two runs and picking up the loss.
