Lady Barons Bounce Back with Sweep Over Point

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Lady Barons softball returned to Mount Vernon for the home opener on Saturday with a doubleheader matchup against Point (Ga.). BPC was able to squeeze the games in due to a delayed start which pushed things back nearly two hours from the scheduled first pitch.

Brewton-Parker (5-3) moved back into the win column with a sweep over the Skyhawks (6-8) in a 7-1 game one win followed by a game two 2-1 victory.

How It Happened | G1 – BPC 7, PU 1

Alyssa Usrey connected for the first base hit of the game in the first inning but was left on base to remain scoreless. Brewton-Parker followed up with two runs in the bottom of the second inning with a two-RBI single coming from Ashley Wilson to score Josalin Whitten and Cailyn Snellgrove.

With a two-run advantage, BPC moved to a four-run edge in the third inning with a two-run homer from Abbey Flowers; her third home run of the season. Point eventually responded with a leadoff home run to add their first run on the scoreboard and followed up with back-to-back base hits.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Lady Barons tallied three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to move to a 7-1 lead before closing things out in the seventh. Brewton-Parker produced three hits with Cayden Fleming connecting for a single followed by a two-RBI base hit from BryAnn Pound as well as an RBI single from Flowers.

  • Point led the batting efforts with a 9-7 hitting advantage.
  • Flowers led BPC with two hits and three RBIs.
  • Laykin Brown picked up her second win of the season, pitching all seven innings for the Lady Barons. Brown notched three strikeouts and walked just one batter.
How It Happened | G2 – BPC 2, PU 1

The Skyhawks struck early with an RBI single to take an early 1-0 lead. Brewton-Parker managed to respond in the bottom side of the third inning notching three hits to help push the leveling score across home.

Kristi Peters singled to lead off the inning before Fleming notched a bunt to move the runner to third. Alexis Bradshaw connected for an RBI single to score a run, leveling the game a 1-1, leaving two runners on base.

After two scoreless innings and very minimal bat production, Brewton-Parker took advantage of a single from Usrey and an RBI double from Flowers to move to a 2-1 lead. Fortunately for BPC, that was enough to get the job done as the visitors went for a quick three-out inning in the top of the seventh to close out the game, 2-1.

Inside the Statistics
  • Five individual Barons notched a hit to help give BPC a 5-4 advantage with the bats.
  • Flowers' double and Bradshaw's RBI led the way while the base running of Bradshaw, Wilson, and Fleming helped, earning a stolen base each.
  • Peters started in the circle and tossed for all seven inning, striking out five batters in the process.
