Barons’ Late Game Surge Falls Short of Knights

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker baseball hosted St. Andrews (N.C.) in the opening game of the weekend series with a nine-inning contest on Friday evening.

The Barons (5-5) surged late in the game but fell short to the Knights (2-3) in an 8-7 loss.

How It Happened

St. Andrews opened the game hot, scoring four runs on three hits while leaving a pair of runners on base. Despite hits from Kennard Dawson and Tate Worrell, BPC was unable to respond with a score in the bottom half of the inning.

After a scoreless second inning, the visitors tacked on two additional runs in the top of the third inning by taking advantage of two hits as well as a pair of errors from the Barons to move to a 6-0 lead. Brewton-Parker managed to find two runs in the bottom of the third with a two-out, two-RBI double from Worrell to score Dawson and Jonathan Phillips.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth before the Knights notched three hits to help push across two more runs for an 8-2 advantage in the top of the fifth. With one runner on base, Chris Harmon came in to relieve Ty Cook who started on the bump.

With a new arm, the Barons found some life, scoring a run in the bottom half of the fifth with Eduardo Castillo recording a base hit followed by an RBI single from Worrell to score Phillips yet again. BPC moved to a five-run deficit but began to surge with momentum after the five innings of play.

Harmon continued to throw for BPC, allowing just one hit in the sixth inning as the Barons' defensive efforts held the Knights scoreless. Kyran Coleman doubled to move a runner to third before Castillo connected for a two-RBI triple to score both Carson Kirby and Coleman. Three runners were left on as Dawson recorded a base hit and Jacob Mantooth reached first after being hit by a pitch.

BPC made quick work of the visitors in the seventh as Harmon struck out two batters, leaving SAU scoreless yet again. Brandon Lawrence produced a double from the leadoff position before Coleman singled which brought home Lawrence for BPC's sixth run of the game, pulling the Barons to a two-run deficit.

Both teams were dealt with swiftly in the eighth inning with three-straight outs to keep the game at 8-2. The Knights were able to produce a base hit in the ninth but closed out the inning scoreless.
