Barons Battle in Exhibition Play at South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Brewton-Parker Men's Basketball competed in exhibition action on Friday afternoon with a contest at NCAA Division I opponent South Carolina State in Orangeburg, S.C.

While the Barons (4-9) were playing as an exhibition, the Bulldogs (4-10) played the game as a countable contest, defeating BPC, 101-84.

How It Happened

The hosts opened on a 10-1 run covering the first three minutes of action before Brewton-Parker was able to get on the board with back-to-back threes from Jordan Johnson and Dre Burroughs. South Carolina State responded with a 7-0 run but an "and-one" play from Damarcus Johnson Jr. broke the run to move the BPC deficit to 10 points with 13:17 on the clock.

Over the next nearly three minutes of action, BPC remained within a single-digit deficit by narrowly outscoring SC State 10-8, down 28-20 with 9:26 to play in the half. The Barons finished the half with a solid performance, besting the Bulldogs 20-14 in the final seven minutes of play to pull the deficit down to just 44-40 at the break.

Brewton-Parker shot 13-of-29 from the field and 6-of-9 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes of play. Both Zailan Blue and Burroughs led BPC with eight points each while Johnson Jr. notched seven.

The Barons battled early in the second half with early buckets from Ferlin Joseph Jr. and Blue to keep the deficit within a two-possession game. SC State answered well with five points to move back into a double-digit lead, holding a 55-45 lead with 16:29 on the clock.

Burroughs knocked down a trey at the 16:19 mark to move the deficit to seven points but the Bulldogs swiftly moved back into a 10-point lead. After taking some time off the clock, SC State managed to get to a 13-point advantage with 10:57 left.

Scores from Johnson Jr. and Kendall Norrington Jr. moved the score to 73-64 in favor of the Bulldogs. The Barons eventually followed with a 7-3 run to pull within five points of the hosts with less than eight minutes to play. Unfortunately, that was the closest BPC would get as SC State eventually pulled away to a solid double-figure lead to close out the game with a 101-84 win.
