MONTGOMERY, Ala. – SSAC/SUN Challenge Crossover action continued for Brewton-Parker Men's Basketball as they took on Florida Memorial on Friday afternoon in Montgomery, Ala.
The Barons (1-3) fell just shy of the Lions (3-0) in a close battle on Friday afternoon, landing short in a 77-72 loss at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex.
How It Happened | First Half
Florida Memorial began the contest with an "and-one" play followed by a basket from beyond the arc to jump to a 6-0 lead within the first two minutes of action.
Lance Smith laid one up for the Barons' first score which was followed by a successful trip to the charity stripe from
Chris Spenkuch, cutting BPC's deficit down to two points.
Brewton-Parker managed to level the score at 11-11 with 15:10 on the clock, outscoring FMU 7-5 within two and a half minutes with Spenkuch leading the way with four points while
Grant Sanders scored three. During that run, BPC was 2-of-3 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the foul line.
Following a trey from the Lions, Sanders sparked a 6-0 run for the Barons with four points of his own to give BPC a 17-14 lead with 12:01 remaining on the scoreboard. After some back-and-forth action, FMU eventually reclaimed the lead from Brewton-Parker and ran away on an 18-2 run in nearly six minutes of play to lead 34-21 with 5:42 remaining.
The Barons were able to finally respond with a score at the 3:07 mark with Smith going 1-of-2 from the foul line. Both teams closed out the final minutes with six points each to close out the first half with a 40-28 lead in favor of Florida Memorial.
How It Happened | Second Half
The Lions came out of the break hot, scoring on three unanswered trips down the floor to move to a 46-28 lead in the opening minute of play. Brewton-Parker slowly began battling back into the game as a jumper from
Dre Burroughs at the 18:24 mark opened the scoring for BPC.
FMU managed to build up to a 20-point advantage with a trey at the 13:07 mark, responding to every successful scoring trip the Barons could piece together. A three-pointer from Burroughs with 12:45 remaining sparked a seven-minute, 22-8 run from BPC which managed to cut the deficit down to just six points with nearly six minutes to play.
Over that six minutes and 49 seconds, BPC shot 7-of-12 from the field, 4-of-5 from three, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe to pull the game back to two scores. Burroughs led the run with 11 points followed by
Zailan Blue's seven.
Despite scoring 13 points in the final five minutes, Brewton-Parker was not able to stop Florida Memorial down the stretch, giving away 12 points. The Lions were able to hold off the late surge from the Barons, holding onto a 77-72 score for the win.

- BPC finished shooting for 40.7% (24-of-59) from the field, 26.3% (5-of-19) from three, and 65.5% (19-of-29) from the foul line.
- FMU led the first half with a 40-28 edge while BPC won the second half 44-37.
- Five Barons scored in double figures with Smith leading with a game-high 16 points and five assists.
- Burroughs scored 15 points followed by Spenkuch and Blue with 12 apiece as well as Sanders with 11.
- BPC was outmatched off the glass 50-30 with Spenkuch leading the Barons with eight rebounds.
- Defensively, both sides notched nine steals each.
