Lady Barons Victorious in Home-Opener Over (RV) Bryan

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Women's Basketball played host to (RV) Bryan (Tenn.) on Tuesday night for the home opener at Gillis Gymnasium.

The Lady Barons (2-0) defeated the Lions (0-1) in tight battle down the stretch, winning 66-60 on their home floor.

"I'm super proud of our group," Head Coach Steve Edwards said. "Bryan is a really good team and they are tough to handle, I'm proud of how we managed to secure this win."

"Our group is defining roles and it's fun to see," Edwards said. "Tonight was a good test for us early and we found a way to get it done."

How It Happened | First Quarter

BPC started the game swiftly with Cori Keats lighting the three-point line on fire with nine points early while Madison Evans knocked down a trey of her own.

The Lady Barons extended their lead to 19-6 with 5:18 left on the clock, scoring buckets from Tori Dorsey and Evans as well as a three-pointer from Cynthia Engler. The Lions made a push late in the quarter cutting into the lead, but a layup from Keats
gave BPC a six-point lead to end the quarter.

How It Happened | Second Quarter

In the first minute and a half of the second quarter, the Lady Barons improved their lead to 25-15 with four points from Evans.

Engler extended the lead to 11 with a three with 7:27 left to play. The Lions produced 10 unanswered points in the last four minutes of the quarter as the Lady Barons closed out the half with a 34-27 lead as Tajahnae Wiggins converted from the charity stripe.

How It Happened | Third Quarter

For the first three minutes of the quarter, it was a back and forth battle, until the Lions gained some momentum and scored eight unanswered to cut the deficit down to a 39-37 BPC lead.

The Lady Barons responded with two free throws and a jumper from Evans to increase the lead back to six. 

A made free throw from Le'La Wright with 3:40 left in the quarter was the last score for BPC. Bryan responded with a three to end the quarter outscoring the Lady Barons 15-10 and cutting down Brewton-Parker's lead to 44-42

How It Happened | Fourth Quarter

Evans started the quarter with a three in the first minute. The Lady Barons were able to extend their lead to 12 with help from Angel McRae and Evans.

The lead was short lived, as the Lions would go on a 12-point run to tie the game up at 58 with 1:44 left to play in the game. Within the next minute, Drexelle Ward made a three and a jump shot to take the Lady Barons back to a five-point lead.
With free throws from Evans and A'aliyah Clay, the Lady Barons were able to secure a 66-60 win over Bryan.

Inside The Statistics
  • The Lady Barons controlled the game, outscoring Bryan in three of the four periods without relinquishing the lead at all.
  • BPC shot 38.2 % (21-of-55) from the floor, 32.1% (9-of-28) from three, and 75% (15-of-20) from the foul line.
  • Evans lead the team with 24 points followed by Keats with 11.
  • Dorsey led the team in rebounds with eight.
  • Defensively, Brewton-Parker forced 19 turnovers from Bryan while notching 12 steals in the process.
