Men’s Basketball Outlasted by No. 16 Eagles in 59-48 Loss

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker men's basketball took on a challenging No. 16-ranked Faulkner (Ala.) team on Thursday night in Gillis Gymnasium.

The Barons (5-16, 3-10 SSAC) fell to the Eagles (19-3, 11-3 SSAC) in a low-scoring affair, 59-48.

How It Happened | 1st Half
  • Brewton-Parker opened with an early 4-0 lead with buckets from Jeffery Huff Jr. and Damarcus Johnson Jr.
  • Faulkner quickly responded with an 8-0 run to capture the lead 8-4, leaving 16:48 on the clock.
  • About two minutes later Johnson Jr. connected on a free throw to pull the Barons into a one-possession ballgame.
  • A pair of treys from the visitors at 13:46 and 12:49 boosted the lead to 14-5 just before Lance Smith converted two scores from the foul line for BPC.
  • As time slipped away from Brewton-Parker, Faulkner began to build up a bigger lead with a pair of jumpers.
  • BPC put together a 6-2 run to pull the deficit down to just seven points with 6:25 remaining in the half.
  • The Eagles responded with seven unanswered points in the following couple of minutes to pull out to a 27-13 lead.
  • Despite a late surge from BPC, Faulkner remained composed enough to close out the half with a 33-21 lead, knocking in a jumper at the buzzer.
How It Happened | 2nd Half
  • The Barons opened the second half strong with six points to knock the deficit down to just two possessions to move the score to 33-27 with 18:28 on the clock.
  • Jordan Johnson connected on a deep ball at the 16:40 mark to spark an 18-11 run from the Barons to eventually level the game 45-45 nine minutes later.
  • The Run was capped off by nine points which included an and-one play from Smith, a steal turned fastbreak score for Huff Jr., and back-to-back slams for Johnson Jr. and Grant Sanders.
  • Over the course of the run, BPC shot 7-of-15 from the floor, 2-of-5 from three, and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe.
  • Smith led the run with six points followed by four from Sanders.
  • The Barons eventually claimed the lead at the 5:19 mark, with Huff Jr. laying in a fastbreak score to lead 47-45.
  • Faulkner essentially slammed the door shut on Brewton-Parker with a 10-0 run highlighted by a four-point play to pull out to a 55-47 lead with a minute to play.
  • Unfortunately for BPC, the Barons managed to find just one point from the foul line while the visitors put together four more points to seal the 59-48 win.
Inside The Statistics
  • BPC shot for 31% (18-of-58) from the floor, 18.2% (4-of-22) from three, and 57.1% (8-of-14) from the charity stripe.
  • Smith led with 15 points and four assists followed by Johnson with 14 points and four assists as well.
  • Johnson Jr. led off the glass with nine boards followed by Sanders' seven rebounds and team-leading three steals.

  • Faulkner held a 43-35 advantage in rebounds
  • The Eagles coughed up 15 turnovers while the Barons gave up 10.
  • Brewton-Parker produced nine steals, scoring just eight points off turnovers.
