Volleyball Secures First Win of Season; Jeffery Earns First Win as Interim Head Coach

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Brewton-Parker Volleyball continued Southern States Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon with a matchup against Stillman (Ala.) in Tuscaloosa.

The Lady Barons (1-11, 1-4 SSAC) captured the program's first win of the 2022 campaign and the first conference win in three years with the sweep over Stillman (0-5, 0-5 SSAC).

"The girls showed up today ready to fight," Interim Head Coach Amanda Jeffery said. "We have been talking all week about playing as a team rather than as an individual and today they accomplished that."

"It was so heartwarming to see the team believe in each other and trust each other on the court," Jeffery mentioned. "We've worked hard but it doesn't stop here. The girls are ready to keep competing and I'm so excited to see them continue to move forward."

How It Happened

  • Brewton-Parker opened set one in the driver's seat, but Stillman remained within reach for the beginning of the set until the Lady Barons pulled away to a 25-11 win to lead the match 1-0.
  • The Lady Barons continued to remain in control for the second set with a dominant 25-12 win for a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Stillman responded in the third set by controlling the first half of the set. BPC battled to minimize the deficit and eventually tied the set at 15-15 before taking over and sealing the sweep with a 25-17 victory.

Inside The Statistics

  • BPC finished with a .310 hitting percentage with Stillman producing a -.015 hitting percentage.
  • The Lady Barons notched 35 kills with Taylor Scarbrough leading the way with 11 followed by Jala Merriweather with eight and Naomi Taake with seven.
  • Katy Mathis recorded 26 set assists and a team-leading seven digs.
  • Merriweather notced five serivce aces followed by R'Eyahn Shaffer and Mathis with four each.
