Barons Land Short at Voorhees

DENMARK, S.C. – Brewton-Parker men's basketball traveled to Denmark, South Carolina to face Voorhees (S.C.) in the first road challenge of the season on Tuesday night.

The Barons (1-1) were knocked down against the Tigers (4-1) in a 68-55 loss in a tough environment on the road.

How It Happened | 1st Half

  • Brewton-Parker opened the game with an early lead as Lance Smith scored the Barons' first three points of the contest.
  • Both teams traded scores early with back-and-forth buckets being shared.
  • Kenny Colwell hit an early trey before Smith followed with one of his own to give the Barons a three-point advantage five minutes into the game.
  • Voorhees captured their first lead of the night at the 13:16 mark to go up 10-9.
  • The Tigers moved to a five-point lead with 10:20 left, capped off by a big three-pointer.
  • With 7:43 remaining in the half, Voorhees advanced to a seven-point lead.
  • Colwell quickly responded with two trips down the floor with a jumper and a trey to pull the Barons to a one-possession game with seven minutes on the clock.
  • A steal and a fast break dunk from Jeff Huff Jr. leveled the game at 18-18 with 5:42 remaining.
  • Voorhees reclaimed the lead and held on to the advantage, closing out the first half with a 29-23 lead.

How It Happened | 2nd Half

  • The Tigers opened the second half with a bucket to lead by eight points.
  • After a couple of trips down the floor, BPC managed to pull the deficit down to four as Smith found a couple of scores and Jordan Johnson converted on a pair of free throws.
  • Voorhees kept at least a two-possession cushion for most of the second half by keeping the Barons from finding opportunities.
  • BPC struggled to break past the four-point deficit Voorhees controlled until a three-pointer from Smith fell through the net at the 9:44 mark to move the Tigers' lead to just three.
  • A good converted free throw from Emmanuel Green knocked it down to just a two-point game with nine minutes to play.
  • Unfortunately, Voorhees started running hot while the Barons cooled off.
  • The Tigers went on an 11-2 run over the course of a few minutes to lead 53-42, leaving just 3:59 left on the clock.
  • Voorhees held a double-digit lead for several minutes until Johnson hit a three-point to make it a 58-50 game with 1:42 left to play.
  • Brewton-Parker struggled to produce on the offensive end, down the stretch.
  • Voorhees managed to hold off the Barons in the end to secure a 68-55 win.

Inside The Statistics

  • Smith led BPC with 20 points and seven rebounds followed by Colwell with 13 points and a pair of assists.
  • The Barons finished the night shooting for 36.4% (20-of-55) from the field, 38.9% (7-of-18) from three, and 44.4% (8-of-18) from the foul line.
  • Colwell led the first half with 10 points, shooting a perfect 2-for-2 from three and 4-of-5 from the field.
  • Smith notched 14 points in the second half, shooting 6-for-9 from the field.
