BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Brewton-Parker men's basketball returned to play after Thanksgiving break with a road contest at Coastal Georgia on Tuesday night in Brunswick.
The Barons (3-2) battled with a second-half surge, but the Mariners (2-6) managed to drop the Barons with a buzzer-beater in overtime for the 84-83 victory.
How It Happened | 1st Half
- The Barons struck first in the game's opening moments with Lance Smith converting a steal into the first two points of the night.
- Both teams traded scores and shared control of the lead early.
- Zailan Blue and Kenny Colwell found early buckets for BPC helping the Barons remain in control of the score.
- The Mariners went on a 7-0 run that covered the span of a couple of minutes to lead 12-6.
- Smith knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to pull the Barons' deficit down to three points at the 12:59 mark.
- Each team continued to answer each other's scoring trips with CCGA remaining in control of the lead.
- After going down by four, the Barons found buckets from Chance Hatcher and Smith to level the score at 16-16 with 8:57 remaining in the half.
- However, Coastal Georgia found a spark and surged to a 14-1 run over roughly four minutes of play to lead 30-17.
- The Mariners remained in control of a double-digit advantage for most of the half's final moments.
- Colwell hit the final bucket of the half for the Barons with a three-pointer to pull BPC back under a double-digit lead, but CCGA answered with a trey of their own to lead 38-27 at the break.
How It Happened | 2nd Half
- Blue opened the second half with a layup to pull the deficit back within single digits.
- The Mariners jumped out to a 14-point lead before the Barons answered with buckets from Smith and Hatcher.
- Brewton-Parker struggled to find the momentum needed to knock down Coastal Georgia's advantage as the Mariners managed to build up to a 17-point lead with 14:19 remaining in the half.
- A three-pointer from Dane Fisher at the 14:04 mark was the first of a 16-6 surge by the Barons that pulled CCGA's edge to just seven points with nearly 10 minutes left to play.
- Jordan Johnson led the surge with seven points followed by Smith with six.
- After going back down by double figures, Brewton-Parker pieced together another huge run by scoring eight unanswered points to force a one-possession ball game with six minutes left on the clock.
- With the clock ticking away, Coastal Georgia remained in control, but the Barons were gaining confidence and battling down the stretch.
- BPC found themselves down just two as Blue converted on a huge three-pointer and Smith's defensive efforts converted a steal into a fastbreak dunk with just over a minute to play.
- The Mariners answered with a layup to go up by four with 44 seconds remaining.
- Shortly after Johnson connected on an and-one trey for a four-point play and the equalizer at 74-74.
- With just a few moments remaining, Coastal Georgia failed to find a basket as time expired.
- BPC outscored CCGA 47-36 in the half, finding the momentum to remain in the contest down the stretch.
How It Happened | Overtime
- Smith and Hatcher picked up two buckets to give BPC a four-point lead to open overtime.
- The Mariners pulled their deficit to a point, but a layup from Hatcher gave the Barons an 80-77 edge with 1:55 to play.
- After a pair of free throws, Coastal Georgia leveled the game 81-81 with 45 seconds left to play.
- Smith was able to clutch up a bucket in the paint with five seconds remaining, but the Mariners we able to knock down a three-pointer leaving less than a second on the clock which sealed the game, 84-83.

- As a team, BPC shot for 41.4% (29-of-70) from the field, 22.2% (6-of-27) from three, and 59.4% (19-of-32) from the foul line.
- Smith led the game with a commanding double-double performance, scoring 36 points and snagging 10 rebounds while gathering five steals.
- Three other Barons found double-digit points with Johnson scoring 11 while Hatcher and Blue both notched 10 points each.
- Smith and Johnson both dished out three assists apiece.
- Defensively, the Barons held a 12-3 steal advantage as the Mariners gave up 24 turnovers on the night.

- CCGA held a 48-41 edge over BPC off the glass.
- The Mariners lost the turnover battle, 24-11.
