(RV) Barons Compete at NWCA National Duals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The (RV) Brewton-Parker Men's Wrestling program competed in day one action at the NWCA National Duals in Louisville, Ky.

The Barons were challenged by three top-20 NAIA opponents with two being within the top-10 in the country.

"We had a tough day today and were not fully equipped for the challenge," Head Coach Kenny Mason said. "We wrestled tough overall, but we were hurting ourselves with the small exchanges. We must be ready to wrestle all seven minutes if we want to win."

Brewton-Parker opened the tournament with a dual against No. 2-ranked Life (Ga.) and unfortunately fell to the reigning NAIA National Champions 46-0. Zayveon Mitchell was downed via fall (2:11) by Chase Ayers at 125 followed by James Stoudenmire falling to Hunter Sparks via a 19-2 tech fall in the 133-lb bout.

At 141, Rex McDaniel took down Bradley Owens with a 10-2 major decision before the 149-lb bout. Julian Hernandez defeated Kohlby Hopper with a 16-1 tech fall. At 157, Levi Bishop fell short against Cole Drescher in an 8-4 decision. In the 165-lb bout, Miguel Angel Hernandez defeated Cody Thompson with a 12-1 major decision.

The Barons gave up the 174-lb bout before Jesse Martin challenged Myles Starke in the 184-lb division. Martin was downed by Starke with a 16-0 tech fall. The Running Eagles followed with another 16-0 tech fall this time with Tony Rogers going against Jonathan Whiting at 197. The dual closed with Spencer Dacus defeating Jesus Riano with a 7-4 decision.

With the loss, the Barons were knocked to the consolation rounds with another tough challenge ahead against No. 7-ranked Southeastern (Fla.). The Fire took down Brewton-Parker with a 43-6 win. Mitchell opened the dual with a loss to Esau Bazilme in a 5-3 decision at 125.

At 133, Xavier Williams defeated Bryant Santiago vial fall (0:21) with Kael Brisker following in 141 to take down Owens with a 16-7 major decision. During the 149 bout, Hopper fell to Andreus Bond with a 16-1 tech fall followed by Trace Braun taking down Bishop with a fall (0:39) at 157.

Thompson was taken down by Wyatt Kirkman at 165 with a fall (2:04) while Stephen Kelle defeated Douglas Peppers with an 8-4 decision at 174. As for 184, Lucas DeSilva picked up six points with a pin (1:31) over Blake Rypel for a top-10 win.

The Barons dropped the 197 and 285 bouts to drop the match 43-6. Whiting lost via a major decision with Riano falling via pin (2:09) in the final bout of the dual.

Brewton-Parker wrapped up the day with an extra challenge against No. 16-ranked Lourdes (Ohio). The Barons fell 31-13 to the Gray Wolves. Keyshaun Taylor was taken down in the 125 bout with a 4-2 decision from Riley Rhone.

Dru Wilson downed Santiago at 133 with a 17-6 major decision followed by Nickalas Henneman defeating Owens with a fall (1:51) in the 141-lb bout. BPC gave up the 149 division for a forfeit before Garret Anderson utilized a 12-7 decision to defeat Bishop at 157.

Thompson battled at 165 but fell short to a 6-3 decision against Richard Jackson. Peppers picked up a win in 174 with a fall (5:42) over Noah Clary followed by DeSilva gathering a 9-1 major decision over William Speight at 184.

Carter Kroll defeated Whiting at 197 with a fall (1:54) before Riano closed out the day with a 2-0 decision over Noah Eikenbary.
