Men's Basketball Struggles in 78-40 Loss to No. 2 Loyola

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. -- The Brewton-Parker men's basketball program continued SSAC play as hosts to No. 2-ranked Loyola (La.) on Saturday afternoon.

The Barons (1-9, 0-2 SSAC) struggled to produce against the highly ranked Wolf Pack (7-0, 2-0 SSAC) in the 78-40 loss.

Head Coach Stephen Birchfield gave his thoughts afterward. "Loyola is one of the best teams in the country," Birchfield mentioned. "We are not ready to compete at their level at the moment."

"Lord willing, we will be better prepared and much more competitive next time we meet," Birchfield added. "It is time that we learn and move forward."

How It Happened

  • Loyola controlled the game from tip-off as the Wolf Pack opened on a 20-1 run before the Barons managed to find their first field goal with just under 11 minutes left to play in the first half. The Wolf Pack was too much to handle for Brewton-Parker as they were able to boost their lead to up to 29 points before closing out with a 42-15 lead at the break.
  • The second half was no different as the Wolf Pack came out hot to continue adding to the Barons' deficit. With just under 12 minutes to play, Loyola boosted their lead to 40. Brewton-Parker struggled to piece together enough on the offensive side of the floor with the Wolf Pack being so tough on both ends of the floor. Loyola finished out the game with a 78-40 lead to gather the win.

Inside The Statistics

  • As a team, the Barons shot for 33.3% (15-of-45) from the field, 28.6% 4-of-14) from three-point range, and 50% (6-of-12) from the free-throw line.
  • Nic Pullum led the way for BPC with 11 points while Floyd Davis led the Barons off the glass with 10 rebounds.
  • Loyola outrebounded Brewton-Parker 41-35 on the afternoon.

Other Notables

  • Brewton-Parker gave up 26 turnovers with Loyola losing just seven. The Wolf Pack also led 19-2 in steals.
