Men's Basketball Falls to Ave Maria 76-64 on Friday Afternoon

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The Brewton-Parker men's basketball program returned to action on Friday, hosting Ave Maria (Fla.) after Tuesday's matchup against Thomas (Ga.) that resulted in a forfeiture for the Barons.

The Barons (0-3) were defeated by a tough Gyrenes (0-1) team in Gillis Gymnasium on Saturday but did not go down without a fight.

How It Happened

  • Ave Maria opened the game on a 10-0 run before Brewton-Parker managed to find a bucket from Bryce Wilson to open the books for the Barons. The Gyrenes continued to run hot as they quickly moved to a double-digit lead, pulling away to a 32-9 lead with seven minutes remaining in the half.
  • Both teams closed out the half trading shots, but Ave Maria was not falling. The Gyrenes closed out the half up 39-22 over Brewton-Parker.
  • The Barons began chipping away at Ave Maria's lead as they managed to pull within 10 points after a huge bucket from Cherry Griffin with 14 minutes to play. A few moments later, Brewton-Parker pulled within eight points as Cameron Cherry scored off an assist from Antrell Williams.
  • The Barons' confidence began to rise as Jacob Casola hit a big shot from beyond the arc to move the deficit to just six points. Unfortunately, the Barons struggled to continue the momentum as Ave Maria pulled away to a 20-point lead with five minutes remaining. The Gyrenes closed out the game with the 76-64 lead, securing their season-opening win.

Inside The Statistics

  • Three Barons gathered double digits on the afternoon with Williams scoring 12 points.
  • Chance Hatcher garnered 11 points while TJ Taylor recorded 10. Both Hatcher and Taylor notched eight rebounds to lead BPC.
  • On the defensive side, Emmanuel Green led with a game-high four steals.
  • As a team, the Barons shot for 33.9% (20-for-59) from the field and 25.8% (8-for-31) from three-point distance.
  • The Barons made 76.2% (16-for-21) of their attempts from the charity stripe.
  • Defensively, Brewton-Parker allowed Ave Maria to shoot 61.4% from the field and 50% from behind the arc. From the stripe, the Gyrenes shot for 55.6% to close out the game.
  • Ave Maria held the advantage off the glass as they outrebounded Brewton-Parker 31-28.
