Barons Fall to Toppers in Doubleheader

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Brewton-Parker Christian University (BPCU) Barons softball team traveled to Blue Mountain, Mississippi, to play the Toppers of Blue Mountain Christian University in a SSAC doubleheader. The Barons battled in both games but fell short, dropping game one 7-5 and game two 4-3.

In the opener, Brewton-Parker built early pressure but could not overcome a five-run second inning. The Barons struck first in the top of the first when Tori Wright drew a walk, stole second, and later scored on a wild pitch to give Brewton-Parker a 1-0 lead. The Toppers responded with a decisive frame in the bottom of the second, pushing across five runs.

Brewton-Parker answered immediately in the third. Morgan Willingham singled to center for an RBI as part of a two-run inning that trimmed the margin to 5-3 and kept the Barons within striking distance. After the Toppers added a run in the fourth on an RBI single up the middle, Brewton-Parker mounted another push in the sixth. Wright reached on a fielder's choice that brought home a run and pulled the Barons within 6-5, capping a two-run frame that again made it a one-run game. The Toppers manufactured a key insurance run in the bottom of the sixth that held the rest of the way.

Game two followed a similar script, with the Barons taking control in the middle innings before Blue Mountain rallied late to earn a 4-3 walk-off victory. The Toppers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly, but the Barons answered in the second when Madisyn Hallar singled home the tying run to make it 1-1. Brewton-Parker moved in front in the third as Willingham continued her productive day, singling to center to give the Barons a 2-1 advantage.

Brewton-Parker extended its lead to 3-1 in the fifth, again behind Willingham, who singled to right field for her second RBI of the game and fourth of the doubleheader. Blue Mountain immediately began its comeback in the bottom half, cutting the deficit to 3-2 on an RBI single. In the sixth, the Toppers pulled even, scoring on a wild pitch, setting up a decisive seventh inning. The Toppers would walk it off in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to take the second game of the day.

The Barons will look to bounce back on March 28, 2026, when they host the Fillies of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in a SSAC conference doubleheader.
