Barons Split With Golden Tigers

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Brewton-Parker Christian University Barons softball team split a road doubleheader with the Brenau University Golden Tigers on February 17, 2026. The Barons struggled in game one, dropping it 10-3, but rallied and beat the Golden Tigers in game two 7-6.

Game one saw the Barons struggle to overcome the Brenau ace, who threw 7 complete innings and gave up just three runs. On the defensive side, the Barons pitchers struggled to keep the Golden Tigers off the base paths, giving up a tough eight-run inning in the bottom of the third that they were unable to overcome.

In game two, the Barons used a fast start and timely hitting to secure the split. Brewton-Parker opened with a four-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Ayzsa Wooten and a two-run single from Hannah Rust to jump in front 4-0. Brenau answered with two runs in the bottom half, but the strong opening frame set the tone for a back-and-forth contest that Brewton-Parker ultimately controlled.

The Barons continued to apply pressure at the plate throughout the nightcap. In the third inning, Alyssa Usrey doubled and scored on a single from Aniston Powell to extend the lead, and Brewton-Parker added another run in the fourth. After Brenau closed the gap and eventually pulled even, the Barons reclaimed the lead for good in the sixth inning when Destiny Lucas lifted a sacrifice fly to score Dixie Justice, pushing Brewton-Parker ahead 7-6. That run stood as the decisive margin.

Maeleigh Burns anchored the game two victory in the circle, working all seven innings and limiting further damage despite 11 Brenau hits. The right-hander threw 78 pitches, allowing six earned runs, and recorded all 21 outs to earn the win. Offensively, Brewton-Parker collected 13 hits in the contest, with Wooten and Rust each finishing with two hits and two RBIs to pace the lineup. The Barons also played clean defense, committing no errors in the one-run win.

Head Coach Madison Herrin reflected on the team's performance, saying. "Tough game one against a great Brenau team. Our girls fought hard today to take one in the series. As a coaching staff, we are so proud of our team!"

The Barons will have a week off before heading to play Coastal Carolina in a doubleheader on the road on February 25, 2026. The Barons will look to keep their winning ways going before returning home for a weekend doubleheader.
