MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Barons Men's Soccer team played Ave Maria University in their second match of the season. Despite playing well in the first half, the Barons failed to stop the Gyrenes' numerous chances, scoring four times in the second half to win the game four to nil. This loss drops the Baron's record to (0-1-1) on the year for nonconference play. They remain (0-0-0) in conference play.
Coach Bob Neuman shared his thoughts after the game with us. "We're a better team than what we showed tonight. It was a competitive first half, but we got away from what will make us successful over the course of the season, and unfortunately, that can happen early in a season."
Coach quickly turned his attention to the rest of their schedule and, when asked how he felt about their next game, told us, "Truett will prove a challenging test next week, but it will also give us the opportunity to get back to work."
First Half
The Barons were matched well for the first half of the game and traded chances back and forth with the Gyrenes. Both teams were nearly even in shots, with the Barons having 5 and the Gyrenes having 6, with both goalies making one save each. The largest discrepancy was seen between both teams in the number of fouls. At halftime, the Barons had 2 versus the Gyrene's 13, yet the Barons left with three yellow cards to Ave Maria's one.
Second half
In the second half, Ave Maria used their advantage in corner kicks to create numerous scoring chances that proved too much for the Barons. Starting at the 55:25 minute mark, Padraic Pierson started scoring for Ave Maria, and soon after, the floodgates opened. Goals later came from Andre Betioli, another from Padraic Pierson, and finally, the last goal came at 79:11 to Grant Goduti.
