Baseball Split Friday Twin Bill at UT Southern

PULASKI, Tenn. – Brewton-Parker Baseball traveled to the Volunteer State to take on Tennessee Southern for a weekend SSAC series in Pulaski, Tenn.

The Barons (15-18, 7-10 SSAC) split the Friday evening twin bill with the Firehawks (11-20, 7-10 SSAC), dropping game one 11-10 and winning game two with an 8-7 score.

How It Happened | G1 – BPC 10, UTS 11 (7 Inn.)

Brewton-Parker struck first in the opening frame with Carson Kirby leading the way with a single to the right side. The Barons managed to load the bases with a walk and a hit-by-pitch before Drew DeMasi pulled in a run on a bases-loaded walk for the 1-0 lead. Tennessee Southern responded in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff homer as well as a two-out, three-run barrel to take a 4-1 advantage.

The Barons took care of three hits and an error in the top half of the second to help push home three runs for a tie ballgame. Jack Morris led with a single followed by Kendell Wade reaching on an error. A double from Brandon Lawrence scored a pair before an RBI single down the left-field line from Michael Son brought in the tying run.

Brewton-Parker added to the tally in the third inning scoring off an RBI single from Kirby to reclaim a one-run lead. Lawrence followed up with an RBI single of his own to help move the Barons to a 6-4 advantage.

The Barons continued in the fourth with two hits to score three runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single up the middle from Morris to lead 9-4. The Firehawks cut the deficit down to two with a solo homer from leadoff position and a one-out, two-run barrel to make it a 9-7 game in the fifth.

Jacob Mantooth answered right back with a solo homer of his own to take a 10-7 lead. Unfortunately, UT Southern shifted momentum in their favor with a leadoff homer and a two-RBI single to level the score at 10-10 in the bottom half of the sixth inning. The hosts were able to shut the Barons out in the seventh inning and notched an RBI double to win 11-10 in the bottom half of the frame.

Inside the Statistics
  • Both teams notched 12 hits apiece as UT Southern led 7-2 in extra-base hits.
  • Six Barons produced two hits each and were led by three RBIs from Lawrence and two from Morris.
  • Carlos Rodriguez (0-3) received the loss after tossing the final 1.1 innings, giving away the final run while striking out three batters as well.
  • Alex Muns started on the bump and tossed for 5.0 innings, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out three.
  • Chandler Koerner made a brief appearance between the two, allowing two earned runs on one hit.
How It Happened | G2 – BPC 8, UTS 7

Son led the Barons with a two-run homer in the opening inning to take a two-run lead. The Firehawks answered swiftly with an RBI double and a two-run homer of their own to claim a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the opening frame.

An RBI single from Kirby leveled the game shortly, but Tennessee Southern utilized another solo home run to reclaim the lead 4-3 in the third inning. Kirby continued in the fourth inning with a two-RBI double to push home the fourth and fifth runs for the Barons.

UTS took care of a single down the left field line to score the tying run but followed quickly on a passed ball to take a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning. BPC responded well in the fifth inning, scoring three runs to reclaim control of the score. DeMasi led with an RBI walk before Mantooth helped to score a run with a sacrifice fly. Dawson managed to score on a wild pitch to give BPC an 8-6 lead in the fifth.

Lastly, the Firehawks scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to pull one run back but that would close the game as the final score. Both teams finished with scoreless outings in the eighth and ninth innings to seal the game shut for a BPC victory.

Inside the Statistics
  • BPC led 11-7 in hits while UTS led 4-2 in extra-base hits.
  • Kirby led with three hits and three RBIs followed by a trio from Tate Worrell.
  • Ty Cook (5-3) tossed for all nine innings, striking out 15 in the process while waling six batters and allowing seven hits for six earned runs.
