Baseball Falls in Pair of Losses to Mobile

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Baseball welcomed Mobile (Ala.) for a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader in Mount Vernon, Ga. on Thursday evening.

The Barons (14-14, 6-8 SSAC) battled the Rams (7-10, 6-5 SSAC) but fell short in a pair of losses.

How It Happened | G1 – BPC 9, UM 12 (7 Inn.)

Mobile struck early and struck fast, scoring three runs in the first inning and another three in the second inning for a swift 6-0 lead. After a scoreless third inning, the Rams added four more runs in the top half of the fourth inning to move to a 10-0 advantage.

Brewton-Parker eventually put runs on the board in the bottom half of the fourth inning with a two-RBI double from Drew DeMasi and an RBI single from Jacob Mantooth to cut the deficit to seven runs. The Rams responded with two homers in the fifth inning to move to a 12-3 advantage.

The Barons began chipping away at the Mobile lead with a two-RBI double from Tate Worrell and an RBI single from Kennard Dawson to pull within six runs. BPC added more runs in the seventh inning with a solo homer from Worrell and a two-RBI single from Mantooth to pull the deficit down to three runs.

Inside the Statistics
  • Mobile led 16-11 in hits.
  • Worrell led the Barons with three hits which included a homer and a double, three RBI, and two runs.
  • Mantooth also notched three RBI with two hits.
  • Demoi Hodge (0-1) started game and pitched just one inning, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out a batter.
  • Caleb Stewart also pitched an inning, allowing two hits and one run.
  • Alex Muns closed out the game with five innings, giving away six earned runs while allowing eight hits. He also struck out four batters and walked two.
How It Happened | G2 – BPC 11, UM 16

Mobile continued their momentum into the second game, opening up with a 7-0 jump in the first inning. Brewton-Parker put a pair of runs on the board with a two-RBI single from DeMasi to cut the deficit down to five runs.

The Rams barreled two homers and utilized a sacrifice fly to move away to a 10-2 in the second inning. The Barons responded in the third inning to cut the deficit to four runs. BPC scored on two errors while Dawson produced an RBI single as well as another from Joshua Valente for a 10-6 ballgame.

The visitors added four more runs over the next three innings, scoring a run in the fourth, a pair in the fifth and another in the sixth for a 14-6 lead. Dawson brought a pair of runners home on a two-RBI single in the seventh before the Rams added another two runs in the top of the eighth.

Brewton-Parker closed the game with RBI singles from Kendell Wade and Michael Son before scoring on a wild pitch to close the game down 16-11.

Inside the Statistics
  • Mobile led 15-12 in hits with both teams giving up two errors as well.
  • Worrell led with two hits and two runs while Dawson notched three RBI on two hits.
  • A total of six arms made appearances on the mound for the Barons.
  • Noah Gilbert received the loss (1-2) with four runs on two hits and two walks.
  • Ty Cook pitched for six innings, striking out six batters, walking another six, while allowing seven runs on seven hits.
