Softball Earns Season Sweep Over Koalas on Wednesday

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Brewton-Parker Softball traveled to Columbia, South Carolina on Wednesday afternoon for a road matchup against Columbia College (S.C.).

The Lady Barons (11-7) defeated the Koalas (12-10) in a 4-2 win in game one followed by a 9-2 victory in the second game for the 4-0 season sweep over Columbia.

How It Happened | G1 – BPC 4, CC 2

After a scoreless two innings, Brewton-Parker took care of four hits and an error to push four runs home. Ashley Wilson singled from the leadoff position and stole second before Alexis Bradshaw reached first on an error and stole a base as well.

Destiny Lucas produced a two-RBI single to center field to give BPC a 2-0 advantage followed by a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Usrey and an RBI double from Chloe Strickland for a 4-0 lead, leaving a runner on base to close out the inning.

Both teams struggled to find scores for most of the game until the bottom of the seventh when the Koalas scored two runs with a single and a double to cut the deficit in half. Fortunately, the Lady Barons were able to hold off for the 4-2 win.

Inside the Statistics
  • Brewton-Parker led 6-3 in hits with Strickland leading the way with two hits and an RBI.
  • Lucas led with two RBI while notching a hit and a run.
  • A total of four Lady Barons stole a base each.
  • Natalie O'Neal (6-4) pitched for four innings and struck out four batters in no-hit ball while Maeleigh Burns pitched the final three innings, allowing two earned runs, three hits and striking out a batter.

Brewton-Parker blew the second game open in the first inning with five runs on five hits and a pair of Columbia errors for a 5-0 lead. After a leadoff single from Bradshaw, Lucas reached on an error to push Bradshaw home for the first run. Lucas then scored on another error for a 2-0 lead.

Usrey barreled a homer to left field to move the Lady Barons to a 3-0 lead before Hailey Gabrich doubled and BryAnn Pound notched a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 advantage. Strickland brought home one final run in the inning with an RBI single for a five-run lead.

Columbia eventually placed a run on the scoreboard, taking advantage of two errors and a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Brewton-Parker scored with two hits and an error in the top of the fourth inning for a 6-1 lead.

Both teams scored in the sixth inning as Tori Wright produced an RBI single for the Lady Barons while the Koalas scored on a fielder's choice for a 7-2 ball game. Brewton-Parker added two more runs to the tally with a pair of scores coming home on an error to move to a 9-2 game lead in the top of the seventh inning.

Inside the Statistics
  • BPC led 11-7 hits with Bradshaw producing a game-leading three hits and three runs.
  • Wright led the game with two RBI as well.
  • As for the base runners, Bradshaw led with three stolen bastes followed by Lucas and Wright with one each.
  • Kira Altman (5-3) earned the win with five innings pitched, allowing five hits and one run while walking one batter and striking out another.
  • Burns pitched the final two innings, giving away two hits and one run while striking out two batters.
