MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Women's Basketball faced (RV) William Carey (Miss.) in Gillis Gymnasium on Thursday night for the Southern States Athletic Conference Game of the Week.
The Lady Barons (15-9, 7-7 SSAC) fell to the Crusaders (16-3, 10-3 SSAC) in a 69-62 battle.
"We lost to a better team today," Head Coach
Steve Edwards mentioned. "William Carey is a really good team and they are well coached. Our girls fought hard tonight and that is all I can ask of them."
"There are times when you have to tip your cap," Edwards mentioned. "We will practice tomorrow and get ready to play another really hot team in Mobile."
How It Happened | First Quarter
Samerria Bryant kicked off the game for the Lady Barons with a three-pointer less than a minute into the game. William Carey took the lead with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes making the score 10-3 with 4:41 left on the clock.
Brewton-Parker responded by scoring seven unanswered points in less than a minute to tie the game up 10-10 with
Keonya Mincey dropping five of the points in the run. The Crusaders picked the momentum back up taking an 8-0 run over the next three minutes. Brewton-Parker ended the quarter with jumpers from Mincey and
A'Aliyah Clay to cut the WCU lead to four, 18-14.
How It Happened | Second Quarter
William Carey took the first points of the quarter to generate a six-point advantage over the Lady Barons.
Angel McRae put up a jumper at the 8:55 mark before the Crusaders picked up six unanswered points to put BPC down 26-16 with 6:55 left in the half.
Brewton-Parker put together a 7-2 stretch of scoring over the next minute or so to cut the Crusader lead to five. William Carey finished the half strong with a 7-3 run to seal the half with a 35-26 lead at the break.
How It Happened | Third Quarter
The Crusaders gathered four more points in the first minute of the third quarter to take a 13-point lead out of the halftime break. Brewton-Parker held onto a tight 11-10 margin over the next three and a half minutes, cutting the deficit down to 49-43 with 3:08 remaining. Mincey led the stretch with five points followed by three points from
Le'la Wright and Clay.
William Carey finished with the final two buckets of the quarter, closing out the last two minutes to lead 53-43 with the final quarter left to play. WCU won the quarter 18-17.
How It Happened | Fourth Quarter
Brewton-Parker produced the first points in the fourth quarter with a jumper from Evans to make it an eight-point game. Evans continued to find the basket, scoring eight of BPC's 12-4 run over the next four or so minutes. William Carey managed to hold off the Lady Barons in the final five minutes, leading with a 12-7 run while going 4-of-9 from the field and 4-of-9 from the foul line to secure a 69-62 victory.

- BPC shot 29% (20-of-69) from the floor, 18% (7-of-37) from three, and 78.9% (15-of-19) from the foul line.
- Mincey led the scoring efforts with 16 points while Evans notched 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
- Clay finished with a 10-point performance while McRae scored six and snagged 14 rebounds in the process.
- Defensively, Brewton-Parker produced nine steals off of 15 turnovers.
- William Carey won the rebound battle 56-38.
