MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - In a gripping basketball showdown on November 26, 2024, the Brewton-Parker Lady Barons faced a narrow defeat against the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners with a final score of 60-59 in Brunswick, Ga. Despite leading at halftime with a score of 33-29, the Lady Barons could not hold their lead, succumbing to a last-moment three-pointer by the Mariners' Morgon Webb.
Destanee Wright starred for the Lady Barons, scoring 20 points, grabbing 9 rebounds, and had 1 steal and 1 assist. Additional contributions came from
Chasity Degale, who scored 13 points, and
Tori Dorsey, who led in rebounds with 12 and added 4 points to the tally. Notable was a crucial layup and free throw by Degale in the game's dying moments which nearly sealed the win. However, despite their efforts, a defining three-pointer by Webb snatched victory for the Mariners.
Coach
Steve Edwards expressed disappointment over the outcome, acknowledging challenges including turnovers and the teams youthfulness "We got beat tonight because of turnovers and immaturity. We controlled the majority of the game and we should have closed. We have to be better late in games. We won't use injuries as an excuse or any other external factors. We didn't get the job done tonight. Coastal Georgia beat us and they earned it," said Edwards.
Looking ahead, the Lady Barons, currently standing at a record of 5-4, will face Life University on December 6, 2024, at Gillis Gymnasium. As the team regroups, they remain optimistic about refining their strategies and execution for upcoming games.
