Barons Come Up Short Against Middle Georgia State

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Barons Men's Soccer continued their campaign, taking on the Knights of Middle Georgia State University, and played a closely contested back-and-forth thrilling match. Unfortunately for the Barons, a goal in the 54th minute by the middle was all it took to sour the mood on a senior night. The Barons honored several seniors before the game, including keeper Andrea Abwe, who had several spectacular saves during the match.

Coach Bob Neuman shared his thoughts on their tough loss: "Games like this show how fine margins are in the game. The guys worked incredibly hard and tried until the end to find a goal.

These are the types of results that we can build off of. We face a difficult test on Saturday against Dalton State. But we're excited to retake the surface,"

First Half

The Barons traded chances back and forth, with the Knights flying down the pitch in an evenly contested match tied by the end of the first half. The Knights were kept off the board by excellent defending from Andrea Abwe and an incredible defensive save from Rayane Sid Ahmed in the 35th minute that prevented a goal. Both teams were forced into halftime, tied nil, and regrouped for the second half.

Second half

In the second half, the Barons started and managed to hold off the Knights for nine minutes before Chase Giron drilled a ball in the upper nineties, which gave Andrea zero chance to make a save. The Barons kept the pressure off and even managed to create chances of their own down to the last minute of play with several incredibly unfortunate bounces that kept the ball out of the Knights net. The Knights also received the only two yellow cards of the match late in the 87 and 89th minutes.

Stats

  • The Barons tied in shots at 15.

  • The Barons trailed in corner kicks seven-two.

  • The Knights led in fouls 19-11.

  • The Barons tied in saves at five.

Next Up

The Barons will look to get right versus Dalton State on October 26th.
