Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Keiser to Open the 2024 Season

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Brewton-Parker Baseball returned to the diamond for the official beginning of the 2024 campaign, taking on Keiser (Fla.) for the first pair of games in the weekend series in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The Barons (0-2) dropped both games to the Seahawks (2-0) in an 8-7 loss and a 13-6 defeat on the road to open the four-game weekend series in the Sunshine State.

How It Happened | G1 – BPC 7, KU 8 (7 Innings)

Brandon Lawrence notched a two-out double in the opening first-half inning but was left on base. After a scoreless first inning and a swift three outs from the Barons in the second, Keiser put the first run on the scoreboard with a solo shot over the left-center wall for a 1-0 lead.

The Seahawks added three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to shift into a 4-0 lead. Brewton-Parker flipped the game over in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs to secure a lead of their own.

Kennard Dawson notched an RBI single to center field for the first run and was followed by a two-RBI single from Drew DeMasi to second base to cut the deficit from four to just one run. After a pitching change from Keiser, Brewton-Parker took advantage of an error to tie the game at 4-4 before eventually swinging into a 6-4 lead with Kendall Wade's two-RBI single to right field.

Keiser managed to respond in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring on a loaded-bases hit-by-pitch and followed with a sacrifice fly for the leveling score. Wade reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth, scoring Dawson for the go-ahead run for BPC to take a 7-6 lead.

The hosts put together another solid response with a two-run homer to take an 8-7 lead which ended up being the final score in the scheduled seven-inning contest. Keiser took care of the Barons in the top of the seventh to thwart a comeback effort.

Inside the Statistics
  • Both teams notched an even eight hits while Keiser edged out with an 8-6 RBI advantage.
  • Michael Son notched two hits to lead BPC while scoring a run as well.
  • Lawrence notched the lone double for the Barons.
  • Wade gathered three RBIs with DeMasi recording two.
  • A total of four pitchers appeared on the mound as Ty Cook started the game and pitched 4.1 innings, followed by an inning from Ryan Dopson, a brief stint from Noah Gilbert (L, 0-1) and Bryce Morley.
  • Cook gave up six earned runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking three.
How It Happened | G2 – BPC 6, KU 13

The Barons opened with a pair of scores in the first inning, utilizing back-to-back walks to start early. After a sac bunt from Tate Worrell to advance the runners, Dawson notched an RBI groundout with Son following with an RBI double for the 2-0 lead.

Keiser got a run back in the bottom of the second, hitting a homer to left field to cut the deficit in half. The Seahawks were able to level the game at 2-2 in the fourth, taking care of a walk and an RBI double to tie the game.

Brewton-Parker struggled with scoring for four innings until the sixth where DeMasi connected for an RBI single for a 3-2 lead. Keiser returned the favor with two RBI doubles to move into control, leading 4-3.

Lawrence homered in the top of the seventh and brought a runner home alongside for a 5-4 advantage. Worrell followed right behind with a solo shot to give BPC a 6-4 edge. Unfortunately, the swing in momentum for the quests shattered.

Keiser moved into an 8-6 lead with four runs on three hits, using a three-run homer and a score off a wild pitch. The hosts shut the game in the eighth innings, piecing together three base-hits and a triple to score five runs for a 13-6 lead. KU held strong and held BPC scoreless for the next two innings, securing the win.

Inside the Statistics
  • Keiser led with a 13-8 hit advantage and an 11-6 RBI edge as well.
  • Lawrence led the hitting efforts for BPC, notching two hits and two RBIs while also scoring a pair of runs.
  • Lawrence and Worrell both notched their first homers of the season.
  • Son produced two doubles and Wade produced one as well.
  • A total of six Barons found some time on the mound with Alex Muns taking the brunt of the load, pitching for 6.0 innings, and giving up four earned runs while striking out three batters.
  • Morely (L, 0-1) was given the loss after pitching for 0.2 innings and giving up two earned runs.
