Lady Barons Struggle in Loss to Stillman on Thursday Night

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Brewton-Parker Women's Basketball traveled to Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Thursday night for a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup at Stillman (Ala.).

The Lady Barons (13-8, 5-6 SSAC) struggled with the Tigers (10-7, 5-5 SSAC) in a 58-39 loss on the road.

"We are not a very good team right now," Head Coach Steve Edwards said. "I must do a better job of having our team ready to play. We were embarrassed today, and the road doesn't get any easier for us."

"We don't have any excuse for the way we have been playing over the last seven games," Edwards mentioned. "We will do all we can to figure out a way to turn it around."

How It Happened | First Quarter

Madison Evans opened the game with three points in the first two minutes to give BPC an early lead before Stillman responded with a three-pointer to level the contest seconds later. The Lady Barons moved to a 7-3 lead with buckets from Evans and Angel McRae, leaving 5:48 on the clock.

The Tigers answered with a 7-0 run to shift the lead in their favor, 10-7 with 3:31 remaining. Tajahnae Wiggins netted the final three points for BPC as SC was able to close out with a layup and a trey to hold a 15-10 lead after the first quarter.

How It Happened | Second Quarter

Wiggins opened with a pair of free throws to cut the BPC deficit to three, but Stillman pieced together an 8-0 run to lead 23-12, leaving 6:04 on the clock. After a scoreless stretch of three minutes, Evans produced an "and-one" play and followed up with a trey beyond the arc to pull the BPC deficit down to five with 1:54 remaining.

Stillman finished with four points to close the half 27-18. The Tigers outscored the Lady Barons 12-8 in the period.

How It Happened | Third Quarter

After an opening free throw from Evans and a layup from Micah Bess, the Lady Barons found themselves in yet another double-digit hole as Stillman went on an 8-0 run to lead 35-21 with 6:34 on the clock.

Brewton-Parker managed to pull the gap back down under double figures with four points from McRae and two from Wiggins. The Tigers finished the quarter with a 7-1 run to lead 42-28 with a quarter of regulation to play.

How It Happened | Fourth Quarter

In the fourth, Stillman continued to roll as the Lady Barons struggled to score and make stops. The Tigers notched a 16-11 edge in the period which sealed the game shut with a 58-39 scoreline. Evans led BPC with eight points and three boards in the period while A'Aliyah Clay hit a shot from beyond the arc in the final seconds of the game.

  • BPC finished shooting for 20.3% (14-of-69) from the floor, 8.7% (2-of-23) from three, and 56.3% (9-of-16) from the foul line.
  • Evans led the game with 20 points and produced a double-double, snagging 10 boards.
  • McRae finished with 13 rebounds and seven points while Wiggins netted seven points as well.
