Faulkner Drops (RV) Lady Barons on Tuesday Night

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Women's Basketball continued with the second installment of a three-game homestand, hosting Faulkner (Ala.) on Tuesday night for Southern States Athletic Conference action.

The Lady Barons (13-6, 5-4 SSAC) were dropped by the Eagles (11-9, 7-3 SSAC) in a 73-56 defeat in Gillis Gymnasium for the first home loss of the 2023-24 campaign.

"Faulkner kicked our butts tonight," Head Coach Steve Edwards said. "They were the better team and we have a long way to go before we can consistently beat good teams. We are in a tough grind right now and we must continue to work and find a way to be there at the end."

How It Happened | First Quarter

The Lady Barons started the game with a quick jumper from Angel McRae, but Faulkner answered back the next possession with a jumper of their own. Cori Keats put up a trey to spark a 9-6 stretch over the next four minutes for BPC to take an 11-8 lead with 4:00 left to play. The stretch was led by McRae with four points and Micah Bess with two.

In the last four minutes of the quarter, the Eagles took a 10-6 stretch to gain an 18-17 lead. During the stretch, Keats put up another three, and Le'la Wright found a bucket and a free throw.

How It Happened | Second Quarter

Nearly a minute and a half into the quarter, BPC broke the silence with a trey from Drexelle Ward to regain a two-point lead at the 8:34 mark. The lead wouldn't last as the Eagles found a bucket seconds later to tie the game up 20-20.

Both teams battled back and forth for the next few minutes, ending with Faulkner taking a 9-6 stretch to put the Lady Barons into a four-point deficit with just under five minutes left in the half.

The Lady Barons ended the half down nine after the Eagles took an 11-5 run over the last four minutes. Tajahnae Wiggins and Keonya Mincey put up jumpers and A'Aliyah Clay made a free throw in the ending stretch as BPC entered halftime down, 40-31.

How It Happened | Third Quarter

Brewton-Parker struck first in the third quarter with a layup from Wiggins, cutting the Eagles' lead to seven. Faulkner responded with six unanswered points to put the Lady Barons in a 46-33 hole.
Over the next four minutes, the teams went on a back-and-forth 6-6 stretch, with McRae and Mincey getting three points from "and ones", in which the Eagles held onto a 10-point lead with 3:09 left in the quarter. The quarter ended with Faulkner finishing on a 7-2 run to put the Lady Barons in a 58-43 deficit.
