(RV) Women’s Basketball Takes Down No. 24 Freed-Hardeman on the Road

HENDERSON, Tenn. – After a day full of travel on Sunday, Brewton-Parker Women's Basketball took to the court on Monday night for a challenging battle on the road. The Lady Barons (12-1) faced No. 24-ranked Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) in Henderson, Tenn. for the first of two tough road contests in the Volunteer State.

Brewton-Parker stepped up in the second half to secure a big upset win over the Lions (11-2) in a 66-62 battle, snapping FHU's 11-game winning streak and advancing to an eight-game winning streak of their own.

"Tonight was fun," Head Coach Steve Edwards said. "FHU is a great program, and they are well coached. We battled tonight and we found a way to beat a great team on the road."

"I'm proud of our group," Edwards mentioned. "We will get some rest and begin preparing for Bethel on Wednesday."

How It Happened | First Quarter

Brewton-Parker opened the game with a three-pointer from A'Aliyah Clay 15 seconds into the quarter before Freed-Hardeman responded with a bucket a minute later and another at the 6:38 mark for a 4-3 lead.

Angel McRae put the Lady Barons up with a jumper with 5:55 on the clock before the Lions could follow with a trey for a lead switch. Nearly a minute later, McRae found the basket again to level the score at 7-7 with 4:39 to play.

The Lions shifted the score back in their favor with a dominant 13-0 run over the next three minutes. Madison Evans finished the quarter with a jumper and a trey to move the deficit to 10 to close out the quarter down 22-12.

How It Happened | Second Quarter

The Lady Barons began the quarter with an 8-2 run led by three-pointers from Samerria Bryant and Keonya Mincey, cutting the deficit to four points with 7:46 on the clock. Freed-Hardeman managed to move their lead to 28-20 after a layup and a pair of foul shots.

Brewton-Parker struggled to land a field goal for the next four minutes, only managing to score from the charity stripe until McRae eventually found the basket with 48 seconds remaining. Both teams closed out the final few minutes with six points apiece as Freed-Hardeman sealed the first half shut with a 34-26 lead.

Despite falling to a 10-point deficit in the first quarter, the Lady Barons were able to outscore the Lions 14-12 in the second period to keep the FHU lead under double figures.

How It Happened | Third Quarter

BPC came out of the halftime break with a layup from McRae and a deep shot from Clay in the first 60 seconds to pull the deficit down to just a one-possession score. After a scoreless three minutes, a layup from FHU broke the drought for a 35-31 lead.

Evans scored a bucket in the paint with 5:45 on the clock before another scoreless run from both teams occurred. Bryant eventually knocked down a big three-pointer with 2:58 remaining to level the score at 36-36.

The final couple of minutes finished with FHU hitting a trey at the 2:28 mark before Bryant followed with an "and-one" to equalize at 39. The Lions closed with a jumper and a three-pointer to hold a 44-39 lead with 10 minutes of regulation to play.

How It Happened | Fourth Quarter

After a quick score from the hosts, Madison Evans sparked an 11-0 run with an "and-one" to help boost the Lady Barons into control of the score with a 50-46 lead, leaving 7:37 on the clock.

Freed-Hardeman responded with a 6-2 stretch over the next couple of minutes to tie the game at 52-52. Brewton-Parker would reclaim the lead at the 4:20 mark with a free throw from Clay which was the first of a 7-0 run that covered nearly three minutes of play.

The Lions clawed their way back from a 59-52 deficit with a quick 6-1 stretch to move the score to 60-58 in favor of BPC. Despite the unwavering effort from the hosts, the Lady Barons were able to hold tough in the final moments by taking care of their opportunities from the foul line.
