MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Women's Basketball hosted Coastal Georgia in Gillis Gymnasium on Monday afternoon.
The Lady Barons (8-1) defeated the Mariners (4-4) with a late-game push to secure a 63-50 win on their home court.
"It is always tough to get wins against a rival," Head Coach
Steve Edwards said. "We wanted to win before taking a break for Thanksgiving. As a team, we need to get better on both sides of the ball and we believe this break will help us."
"Our next game is the 28th at Faulkner and we hope to be at our best at that time," Edwards added.
How It Happened | First Quarter
The Lady Barons started the game in a six-point hole in the first three minutes of play. BPC managed to cut the deficit to one with a trey from
Keonya Mincey and a layup from
Angel McRae, leaving five minutes on the clock.
A layup from
Madison Evans gave the Lady Barons a 7-6 lead nearly three minutes late, but Coast Georgia responded with a successful "and-one" play to take a two-point lead with 1:35 on the clock. The Mariners were able to close out the quarter with a 13-11 lead, scoring four points and giving four up to Evans in the final 60 seconds.
How It Happened | Second Quarter
Brewton-Parker moved back into control with an opening bucket from McRae followed by a three-point from
A'Aliyah Clay at the 7:52 mark, taking a 16-13 lead.
After some slow back and forth for the next three minutes, Mincey put up a trey to spark a 9-3 run led by Mincey with five points and Evans with four points to give the Lady Barons a 29-20 lead going into half time.
How It Happened | Third Quarter
BPC started the third quarter with Clay on the free-throw line to extend the lead to 10. The Mariners responded with an 11-2 run to cut the BPC lead to one with 6:32 left in the quarter.
Brewton-Parker outscored Coastal Georgia 7-2 in the next three minutes of play to take a 39-33 advantage over the guests. The quarter closed with a pair of trips to the foul line for the Mariners and three points for the Lady Barons with BPC holding a 42-37 lead after three quarters.
How It Happened | Fourth Quarter
Coastal Georgia scored the first four points of the quarter to cut Brewton-Parker's lead to only one with 8:20 left to play. BPC responded with a jumper from
Tajahnae Wiggins that sparked an 11-3 run led entirely by Wiggins to give the Lady Barons a 53-44 lead with 3:16 on the clock.
After nearly three minutes of slow play, the Mariners pulled the game back within two possessions, knocking down a shot from beyond the arc with 48 seconds left. The Lady Barons would seal the game shut from the foul line as Evans netted five of the final eight points for the 63-50 win.

- BPC shot 31% (18-of-58) from the floor, 13.6% (3-of-22) from three, and 77.4% (24-of-31) from the foul line.
- Evans led the team with 20 points and nine rebounds, followed by McRae with 12 points and eight rebounds.
- Wiggins scored 11 points and Mincey scored 10 points.
- Defensively, Brewton-Parker forced 24 turnovers and recorded five steals.
- Coastal Georgia secured the rebounding battle with a 44-38 margin.
