Barons' Second-Half Surge Falls Short in 4-2 Loss to No. 17 CIU
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Brewton-Parker Men's Soccer faced No. 17-ranked Columbia International (S.C.) on the road for a Labor Day battle on Monday night.
The Barons (0-3-1) fought hard in what proved to be a pivotal second-half match against the Rams (1-1), falling short of a comeback in a 4-2 defeat.
"CIU is a good team, they proved that tonight, but take nothing away from our guys," Head Coach
Bob Neumann said after the match. "We won the desire battle and to come from a two-goal deficit to level things was an immense achievement."
"We still have a big week ahead with road contests against Keiser and Florida National," Neumann added.
How It Happened | First Half
- The Rams were rather dominant in the first half of play with a 10-3 shot advantage.
- CIU scored early in the 9th minute for the 1-0 lead and followed with a goal in the 26th minute for a two-goal edge over the Barons.
- Charles Williams and the BPC backline kept the Rams from adding more to the tally as Williams notched four saves and the Barons were credited with a team save as well.
How It Happened | Second Half
- In the 50th minute, Jade Oliver knocked in the Barons' first goal of the match off a corner kick by Landon Brafford.
- With a one-goal deficit, the Barons continued to battle throughout the match and eventually found the leveling goal in the 79th minute.
- Sven De Heij snuck past the Rams' defense to net the equalizer with the help of Jacob Shield from the midfield.
- Unfortunately, CIU answered quickly with a goal 12 seconds later to reclaim the lead, 3-2. The Rams slotted home one final goal in the 88th minute to seal the game as BPC could not produce an offensive threat in the final moments of the match.
Inside The Statistics
- CIU held the overall shot advantage, 19-10. The Rams also edged out the Barons in shots on goal, 10-6.
- Derventz Altidor led BPC with a total of three shots, two of which were on goal.
- Oliver bagged his first goal of the season while De Heij netted his second goal of the 2022 campaign.
- Both Shield and Brafford notched their first assists of the season.
- Williams has gathered back-to-back starts for Brewton-Parker and totaled five saves on the night with a total of 18 in the last 180 minutes of play.
