Brewton-Parker Bounces Back with 68-49 Win Over Stillman

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Women's Basketball hosted Stillman (Ala.) in Gillis Gym on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Barons (10-6, 4-4 SSAC) bounced back after Thursday with a convincing 68-49 win over the Tigers (8-8, 2-5 SSAC).

"We got a good bounce-back win today," Coach Steve Edwards said. "We were better defensively, and we were solid off the glass."

"Our young players are growing up quickly," Edwards mentioned. "We want to continue to build ourselves up so we can play our best basketball over the next two months."

How It Happened

Brewton-Parker opened the game with a five-point lead in the first minute and a half after Stillman failed to convert on two trips down the floor. The Tigers finally got on the scoreboard at the eight-minute mark to move BPC's lead to three. Stillman clawed their way back into the lead over the course of the next few, claiming the 9-8 lead with 5:31 left on the clock.

The Lady Barons quickly responded to level the game at 9-9 but the Tigers pulled the lead back to four points with 3:20 remaining. Stillman advanced its lead to five points with less than a minute remaining before Brewton-Parker closed out the opening quarter with three points to knock the deficit down to just two, as Stillman led 17-15.

In the opening minutes of the second quarter, BPC slowly built momentum and began chipping away at the lead. The Lady Barons reclaimed control of the score at 6:30 on the clock to lead 22-21. Stillman answered right back to capture the lead again but a three-pointer from BPC wouldn't allow it. Brewton-Parker built up to a nine-point lead with a minute left before closing out the second quarter with the 37-30 lead.

Brewton-Parker opened the second half on a 9-2 run, moving the lead to 14 points. BPC held on to the double-digit lead until the 3:15 mark as Stillman managed to pull within eight points. For the final few minutes, both teams struggled to find the net as BPC managed to pull the lead back one point. The Lady Barons outscored the Tigers 12-10 in the quarter to lead 49-40.

Stillman opened the fourth quarter with a jumper, knocking the deficit down to seven points. The Tigers managed to hold off the Lady Barons for a couple of possessions until BPC found scoring ways with two free throws. Brewton-Parker advanced to an 11-point lead with 6:48 left on the clock. Over the next few minutes, BPC held on to the double-digit lead and eventually closed out the game with a 19-point lead to win 68-49.

Inside The Statistics

  • Madison Evans led the charge for BPC with 17 points and nine rebounds. Sy-Marieona Williams and Alexia Galloway both notched nine points in the win as well.
  • Both Angel McRae and Evans led the Lady Barons off the glass with nine boards apiece.
  • Brewton-Parker dominated 50-32 in rebounds.
  • The Lady Barons also held the advantage in all three facets of shooting. BPC shot for 36.5% (23-of-63) from the field, 28% (7-of-25) from three, and 62.5% (15-of-24) from the free-throw line.

Other Notables

  • Stillman gave up 13 turnovers with Brewton-Parker giving up nine. The Lady Barons outscored the Tigers 13-8 in points off turnovers.
  • The BPC bench outscored Stillman 34-10 for the afternoon.
  • The Lady Barons led 7-4 in steals.
