Women's Wrestling Opens Season with 23-13 Win Over Elmira College

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Brewton-Parker women's wrestling opened the season way up north to take on NCAA DIII Elmira College in Elmira, New York.

The Lady Barons (1-0) downed the Eagles (0-2) 23-13 while in hostile territory. The Eagles were making the program's home debut on Tuesday night with a packed crowd in attendance. Fortunately, the Lady Barons were able to take down Elmira for the first win of the season.

The dual opened with no contests in both the 101 and 109 divisions. Alyssa Valdivia opened the dual with a 10-0 tech fall in the 116-lb class to give Brewton-Parker the 4-0 lead. For the 123-lb class, the Eagles took a 5-4 lead after pinning Alesandra Burgos at 4:38 in the match.

Sydney Allman won the 130 division by way of forfeit to boost the Lady Barons' lead to 9-5. At 136, Leidaly Rivera took down her opponent via a 10-0 tech fall to move Brewton-Parker's lead to 13-5.

During the 143 bout, Jorie Richardson secured the win with a tech fall of her own to boost the lead to 17-5 in favor of Brewton-Parker. Merianyeli Mercado fell in the 155-lb bout by an 8-7 decision, yet she was able to add one point to the BPC lead.

At 170, India Page secured the win by pinning her opponent at the 2:21 mark to move the lead to 23-8. Closing out the dual, Elmira won the 191 match by way of forfeit to make the final score 23-13.

Brewton-Parker now looks ahead to Nov. 16 as they will host Life (Ga.) and St. Andrews (N.C.) in Gillis Gymnasium.
