Lady Barons Roll Past Coastal Georgia in 84-59 Win on Wednesday Night

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – In a rematch from the season opener back on Oct. 26, the Brewton-Parker women's basketball program defeated Coastal Georgia on Thursday night to remain undefeated in the first three games of the 2021-22 campaign.

The Lady Barons (3-0) rolled past the Mariners (0-2) 84-59 with a great team performance all around.

Head Coach Steve Edwards expressed his thoughts shortly after the game. "There were times that we played well together on both ends of the floor tonight," Edwards said. "We really want to play as one unit."

"We have good depth, and we want to utilize it as best as possible," Edwards added. "We need to be better from the free-throw line and we have to be more disciplined on the defensive end."

"We shared the ball well and we had around 20 assists tonight," Edwards mentioned. "One goal of ours is to get 20 plus assists each game. We are improving daily and I am proud of how hard my team works."

How It Happened

  • The Lady Barons controlled the game from tip-off as they jumped off to a quick five-point lead with a deep three from Madison Evans. The Mariners pulled back within one point after back-to-back buckets. Brewton-Parker pulled away to a six-point lead quickly with Coastal Georgia recovering a couple of points from free throws. Alexia Galloway hit back-to-back three-pointers to help boost the Lady Barons to an eight-point lead at the end of the opening quarter.
  • In the second quarter, the Lady Barons continued to move quickly as their lead grew to 13. For most of the quarter, Brewton-Parker's lead bounced between 13 and 11 points over Coastal Georgia. After the Mariners were able to pull within eight points of the Lady Barons but Brewton-Parker responded with threes from Sy-Marieona Williams and Galloway to lead 39-25 at the half.
  • To open the second half, the Lady Barons quickly increased their lead to 18 with two consecutive scores from Evans before the Mariners could respond with a bucket of their own. After a brief fluctuation between an 18 and 16-point lead, Brewton-Parker advanced their lead to 20 with seven minutes remaining in the third period. The Lady Barons managed to boost their lead to as high as 27 in the period but closed out the third installment with a 66-40 lead.
  • In the fourth quarter, Micah Bess opened with a three-pointer to give the Lady Barons a 29-point lead. Coastal Georgia was only able to find scoring opportunities from the free-throw line as they struggle. Halfway through the fourth, Mayya Hopkins connected on a big three-pointer to give Brewton-Parker a 32-point lead, which was the Lady Barons' biggest lead of the night. Towards the end, Coastal Georgia scrapped for some points as the Lady Barons closed it out with an 84-59 final score.

Inside The Statistics

  • A total of five Lady Barons gathered double-digit points with Angel McRae picking up her third straight double-double performance.
  • Individually, Evans led the team in scoring a total of 18 points while connecting on 8-of-13 shots from the field. McRae garnered 12 points and 15 rebounds on the night while making 5-of-12 attempts from the field. Both Galloway and Hopkins notched 13 points apiece on the night while Williams gathered 11 of her own.
  • As a team, Brewton-Parker connected on 31-of-81 shot attempts for a 38.3 field goal percentage. From beyond the arc, the Lady Barons shot for 47.8% (11-of-23). Lastly, the Lady Barons connected on 11-of-19 (57.9%) attempts from the charity stripe.
  • Brewton-Parker notched 19 assists as a team with Evans leading with four.
  • Defensively, the Lady Barons forced 23 turnovers while giving up 14. BPC notched 13 steals on the night and eight blocks. Bess led Brewton-Parker with four blocks for the game.

  • Brewton-Parker edged out Coastal Georgia in rebounds with a 47-39 advantage.
  • The Lady Barons recorded 41 points off turnovers and scored 16 second-chance points on the night.
  • The bench provided Brewton-Parker with 43 points while the Coastal Georgia bench produced 27 points.
